A poor day on the pier yesterday, spoilt by tons of eating crabs grabbing baits as soon as they touched bottom. There must be millions of them! There was however a bit of really bad luck. I was fishing the mid sections of the pier and noticed Wilf Reed struggling with what appeared to be a large...

No cod - just Moray eels, trigger fish, snappers and wrasse. The worms you buy in Hong Kong are about 4feet long but very thin. A bit like a ragworm/lugworm cross. When you buy them they come in newspaper with a razor blade to chop them up. Most of the people we saw fishing used hand lines and...

Charlie we are to old to climb gates!! It was a Tynemouth match and the gate is opened by the pier warden so we can push our trollies along the pier. It was the best match we have had for a number of years with fish everywhere. Apart from the sized fish that were weighed in, there were loads...

    Best catches

Stuey, I remember Joe Joyce well as if it were yesterday. I can even remember the crash helmet. Joe was a smashing guy who was liked and respected by all in Whitley Bay club. In those days W/B club had some great personalities and we had some memorable times. I joined in 1956 and will always...

    Best catches

Class post boblydon. Steven Mather one of the Whitley Bay juniors at the time still holds the Scottish shore record for coalfish. I think it was just under 12lbs. I remember that evening well. We had about 15 juniors with us and I spent all evening dashing about, helping to land fish and collect...

    Best catches

I hate people who brag but due to overwhelming demand heres a few tasters for you. Best catch of codling from the shore was 45 from Blyth beach with fish up to 5lbs. That particular year I landed close to 400 cod! Biggest local cod landed was 23lbs - 3oz from the Sumps at Rocky Island. Over...

    watch your back

Last night I was fishing at Quarry hole Newbiggin and some t**t sneaked up and stole my Shakespeare Beta tackle box. The box had loads of gear in it including a SLOSH20 and headlamp. When you tot up how much everything equates to it is quite surprising. I was fishing about 50yards from my gear...

    Virgin Media or Sky

I'm with Sky having changed a month ago. I'm on broadband max which costs £10 a month which gives speeds up to 16mb and unlimited downloads. I have however had teething troubles with a dodgy router and erratic connection problems. Unfortunately Sky's technical people are in Northern Ireland and...

    Getting worse.

I can remember the year of the haddock! Actually it was 2 years where there were loads of haddock . I cant remember which years but it was at least 40 years ago. They were everywhere, especially from Whitley pipe and even a few off Whitley beach. The top spot was the dolphins in the river Tyne...

    Cheeky bird!

Fished Tynemouth pier yesterday in the retired members match. Something unusual occured. I was fishing next to Mick Styles when a comorant landed on the pier and tried to pinch a coalie off Micks trace. He had just landed a double shot of the regulation 33cms coalies. The coalies were deeply...

    Swordfish caught off Newbiggin

Saw a mobile phone picture of it last night. Huge fish caught by Peter Dent in his salmon nets. Swordfish do turn up from time to time of this coast. I watched them landing these fish at a market in Spain last year. Seems to be the same species that they get in the med.
