Meltham and District Sea Angling Club meets monthly, usually on the first Sunday of each month, at the Travellers Rest Public House, Slaithwaite Road, Meltham, Huddersfield. Fees are £6 per month, which includes NFSA membership, and the club is affiliated to the NFSA. We mainly go boat fishing on charter vessels, on both the West and the East coasts, with some longer trips, EG Easter at Weymouth. for the weekend and a summer trip to Norway. We use both downtiding and uptiding, as well as jigging over North Sea wrecks.
There is an enthusiastic, but not terribly skilled, shore fishing section who specialise in catching fish so small that they haven’t had many “keepers”. Those who can cast three squid two hundred yards into a force nine gale will be most welcome so long as they tell the rest of us how its done.
We have around 18 planned trips evenly spread over the year, each of which is a competition, and each members top three catch results are compared for an annual “accumulator competition”. However sometinmes we fit in extra and sometimes we get blown off.
Juniors, from 7 to 16 are welcome, with no fees for juniors, and four trips in 2005 specifically for junior members (2x 7 hours Rhyl and 2x 8hours from Beaumaris), both with skippers who will do their utmost to help junior members catch fish.. Juniors can come on the other trips as well, and are usually paired with an experienced angler who will help them.. Insurance only covers juniors who have attained their 7th birthday.
The club also has the “Blue Dolphin” award for the person who does the most stupid thing connected with fishing in the year, so you can see that although we take our fishing seriously, we also have a laugh. In fact the late founder-president told me, when I joined the club “We’re a bit daft. We’ve got to be. Here we are, 90 miles from the nearest coast and we go sea fishing”
