Same as all piers, packed, wild dirty and unsafe during mackerel time and like all piers if the shoal is in you will catch if not then just the odd 1 or two.

Any state of tide fishes for them off shields but if we get alot of rain then fish the sea facing side.

Worst comes to worst just look for the groups bunched up on the pier and you will know where they are catching.

there is never many on the south pier when i fish there the most ive seen is 3 people he was just wondering cos we have fished there most of the winter

lyk dave c said we fished it a lot during the winter and never seen many on just the odd couple.but av never tried it in summer so just wondered if anyone ad

as matchman says , you are not allowed to fish the south pier
to get there you have to have a dock pass(very rare and none for fishing) or break the law by gaining entry illegally

i was on the north pier last week and there was 2 - 3 folks fishing the south pier but security came and removed them

aye a new them lads they telt me that someone on roker peir made a 4n call and got them thrown off.just fishing at the end off the day a would understand if people were walking on with crowbars n that.

yeah id imagine there would be no reason why you wud'nt get macky on the south pier but if you are going to chance it m8 i would keep it to your self, your only going to get the same replys on the internet m8

a pier that is just sitting there doing eff all , i remember when i was a young pup ya cud see the lads fishing on there and fishing comps etc ,dont know why they dont open it to the anglers and i wud pay a any money what they ask for permits a year to access it .blooming great fishing grounds in that area.

it doesnt get as much bashing from the waves as roker pier

Too true coddy. Some excellent fish have been caught there in recent winters.

It was closed to fishermen when they lost a 10 ton phosphor bronze propeller years ago.
There was a cartoon in the Sunderland Echo of a fisheman, rod over his shoulder, walking out with the prop on his hook!!!!!!!!!! They just needed the excuse to close it too us. Last time I fished it was in the 70's at a Northern Fed open. Only caught 2 big eater crabs and a 3 lb lobster!

Its a fantastic pier for Mackerel, but you'll never get on during the day, which sort of defeats the object.

When I fished it with permit years ago, you could follow the mackerel down the full length of the pier, although the end was the hotspot.

They regularly used to boil with coalies at the bottom end of the pier.
