Sat Navs

genuine reason for bringing a 2 year old thread back to life (new threads are very wasteful when a thread has already been started :red:)...

whilst not buying anything online today I looked at a GPS dongle for the laptop...

BlueNEXT BN-903 USB GPS Dongle

now the reason I was looking at this is because while my Android phone has GPS and Google maps it requires a data connection to refresh the data

Is this dongle the answer?...assuming I can find a suitable offline maps program...in fact can anyone recommend a (free? reasonably priced?) software package that would suit my needs?

Looked into this and seems it's actually cheaper/easier to buy a stand alone GPS/Sat Nav' unit than try and emulate the same on a PC - there is no such thing as "free" software so you're looking at best part of £50-100 for a half decent program

Most phone navigation requires data connection

Last chuck of the dice is an App' called Mapdroyd...got the App' but the maps file is 2 gig' so will download that at home tonight

tom tom and garmin are ya best makes ov sat nav dont bother with owt else there crap theres a little saying in life you get wat u pay for lol :)

google maps for your phone bud.

or an ordinace survey map of the area you want to fish, i have a shat load for the areas i have fished up the coast and across the country, give you the paths, lanes, placed to park etc, tidal marks and also the lay of the lands, beach, rocks, skeers etc :D

i also have some naval / mariner sea maps for depths of water and features etc

in the 2 years since this thread started I have ticked off the first two comments in your post Boz :D

S/W Scotland pretty much O/S Mapped off along with parts of South Wales, Cornwall and the South Coast ;) and used google maps on the phone last trip out to argue with Gregg where a gulley was :D

Garmin Nuvi seems to be the front runner at the mo'

Had a Garmin Nuvi for 3 years now Tony, it's great - gets me places I need to go, warns me of approaching speed cameras, can carry it around as GPS if I want but most useful of all is in the car it acts as a handsfree (bluetoothed to my phone). Can deffo recommend.

Gary :)

i use a few different online sat maps providers to see low water marks, as some of them are taken at different tides. I also has a certain one that has not got high profile marks blanked out around nuclear power stations ;D lol
i didnt notice the age of the thread lol
