Early start pays off

Decided on an early start this morning to see if there was any fish about.

Got out of bed at 3am and was on a snowing Blyth Pier at 4am.
Went straight to my lucky spot where I got my pb & set up there.

I have been alternating baits on my casts lately, today I started with lug/crab & razor cocktail on my first cast & missed a good knock.

Second cast was with whole squid.
The squid was not in the water 10mins when I got a good bang & slack line.
This resulted in the first fish of the morning, a nice codling of 2lb 6oz

Had my other rig ready baited with another cocktail, so on that went, and back in.
Had no takers to that one.

It was back to whole squid again and just like the second cast, was not in the water long when a fish took that.
Another nice codling of 2lb 10oz

After that fish, I decided to stick with whole squid on all of my casts.
I was getting some cracking bites & must not have been hitting them right as I was losing fish when I was reeling in.
Could be that they were just lip hooking & the big swells were causing too much pressure on the fish, don't know.
Think I lost about 7 fish like that.

Just after the turn of the tide at about 9am I hooked into another fish that I managed to keep on & that codling took the scales to 2lb 9oz

Had another hour after that but without a touch, so I decided to call it a day.

It's the best shore session I have had in years, other than getting my pb on New Year's Eve of course.
I really enjoyed it this morning, with some excellent sport.

Nice result there mate - well done! When I was there a couple of weeks back I got three (when everyone else was struggling) that were all lip hooked on the small hook I was using as a pennel, all of the bait was hanging outside their mouths. Coupled with the fact that when I gutted them they were stuffed with sandeels & small fish, this made me think they were merely picking at the baits rather than wolfing them down - if they've been feeding heavily recently this might explain why you had a bit of trouble hooking into some of them?

Cheers, Gary :)

Well done on the fish, its good to see a few starting to show. By the looks of them fish they have been well fed, its the same story with most at the min.

Excellent result but you deserve that for getting up at 3am. I would have seen the snow and went back to bed. Well done and a good report as well

Couple of knocks in the first hour, then nothing at all for 3hrs so called it a day.
