  • Fishing Comp

The day had finally arrived for the biggest fishing comp in the North East sponsored by Ladbrokes.

First prize £3000 and the heaviest fish wins £1000

The weather was attrocious. Heavy snow fall, freezing temperature, sea flat calm. Yet for 4 hours 300 anglers lined the beaches and proms for miles down the coastline.

2 minutes from the end and not a single person had caught a fish, not even a whiting. All of a sudden, an 8 year old boys rod is nearly bent double. As the rules of the comp said that any fish hooked within the comp time can be played out and landed. 30 minutes later he landed a cracking flattie of nearly 4lb. A big round of applause went up from the now gathered crowd.

Once the gear had been packed up, everyone made their way to the weigh in and presentation.

The MD of Ladbrokes stepped up and announced that the only fish cauhgt was a 4lb flattie by an 8 year old lad, therefore not only did he win the heaviest fish but the overall comp.

The lad was beaming at the thought of winning £4000 and his first major comp and proudly walked up to the podium. The MD shook his hand and presented him with £800 in cash.

The lad looked down and said \'What\'s this, I thought it was £3000 for winning and £1000 for the heaviest fish. I won both so I should have won £4000\'.

The MD for Ladbrokes said \'That\'s right son, but you only get a 1/5th of the odds for a plaice\'!!!
