  • my little hero

Went along to the Pickering Game and Country fair while I was in North York’s to see how the little fellow got on, wasn’t expecting much as this was first fair we had been to this season and had done very little training. Well the little fellow exceeded all expectations. Course was retrieve two thrown dummies from long grass and one dummy from a lake, total points 30. Got there about dinner time, booked in, quite a few had already had a few goes as they go early morning, I won’t let him have anymore than two goes. Anyway, after first round we where well up the field with 29pts, dropped a point at the water retrieve. Anyway decided to have another go, twenty points for the two grass retrieves, he pulled out all the stops and got another ten for the water retrieve, the first maximum points he has ever scored. By the end of the day five dogs on 30 points, after a first run off, a long retrieve from long grass, three of us on ten, another long retrieve with another dummy thrown across course as a distracter, all that separated the three dogs was the slight difference in time dogs took to find dummy, we ended up third.
On the Sunday got there again around dinnertime, again a few already had posted good times, with a big queue we had a cup of tea and a little sit. Made way to course, the stewart stating the little fellow is one of the most laid back spaniels he has ever seen, off he trotted for the first retrieve a few laughing at his speed, or lack of, by the time he was bringing the second dummy back they where clapping and cheering him. After the water retrieve he posted the first 30 pointer of the day on his first run that was us till 4.30 for the final, lazy afternoon on the lounger. By the time the final came there where six dogs on 30points. As usual those in final are out of sight of the dogs running, I was fourth to go and went straight into the lead with an almost perfect run, second last dog out gave a perfect run and the last one lost the dummy, so we ended up second, extremely proud of him, if there had been an over all prize, as there sometimes is for the two days we would of walked it, as the others who where 1st, 2nd, 3rd on other days came nowhere on their other day. Had a laugh on the Monday, was busy beside the car and the little fellow went to the car door and looked at me, he must of thought we where going again.
