  • Disgusted and Sickened

Been having a walk along the big beach at Shields every day for the last fortnight (since the mini stroke) for a bit gentle exercise for my left side and a bit chillout.

Ever since the weather got nice I\'ve spent most days picking up broken glass and placing it in the more than numerous waste bins not a stones throw from the waters edge (mainly because the kids like to plodge). The last two nights have taken the biscuit though; over two dozen beer cans, bella bottles, bottles of milk, pop bottles, boxes, packaging from inflatables, sealed bag of ammo peeler crab (?!)

More worrying though - 3 not long dead seagulls last night and 4 more tonight. Now I know birds die all the time and get washed up, but more worrying today was the fact that 3 plastic wads from shotgun cartridges were also lying at the low tide mark. It would take some doing to get a shotgun down to the beach at any time of the day or night and actually fire it, so I\'m assuming that it\'s happening away from the shore?

The mind boggles as to what motivates these sick b*stards

Sad news Rob. No responsible gun owner would dream of discharging a shotgun on a beach let alone shoot birds so I can only assume it\'s a sparryheed chav or the like that got his/her hands on a gun. I hope the problem is sorted before someone innocent gets hurt or even worse, killed

Glad to hear your getting around and recovering tho, that\'s good news
    Regards, Graham

i do not want to point any fingers but a few years back i was walking along shields pier and heard a shot from what i thought was a shotgun i then saw seagull spinning from the sky and landing in the sea. i didnt see who fired the shot but the only place it could have come from, from where the seagull fell was a salmon netters boat moored just off the pier. they have been there all week this week???

I remember it all too well Tony. I was working down at Peterlee at the time and I actually heard one of the lads I worked with bragging about it before it had even hit the news

Apparently lads still get down to Marsden Bay with air rifles (using the Grotto steps under cover of darkness) to shot the pigeons that frequent the cliff sides and the caves (as well as anything else that moves probably)

Yeah Flathead, that would tie in with where the bodies and the shotgun wads were found.

they deserve a good kicking for killing the birds, fell out with a gill netter last time i was on shields pier 2 birds stuck in his nets still trying to escape and he didnt have list to move the boat 10 yards to free them, by the way arent shot gun shells traceable?
