never had any probs with the sepia film, although it was fuji and developed at fuji in whitley bay, might make a difference. Regarding the wildlife photography no sweat with the lenses you already have, i got a 75-300mm when i first went to South Africa, the ranger got us so close i had to drop down to a 38-76mm, ten foot away from a pride of lions and belive it or not the flash did not bother themn a bit. And these where treul;y wild lions, not on a game reserve. And thirty metres away from a rhino. How there was no camera shake i dont know. As for the focus lock, sometimes if an animal or bird was moving you could lock on and still be out of focus when you took the snap. As TC says it is a case of knowing when to use which.
As for all the technical nitty gritty, TC is our man and not a dinosaur, i will prodably find that i will use manual focus more and more.
