Seems to me that NUFC have a SERIOUS problem with security - everyone knows what went on LOL - Who knows why Liverpool did`nt want him and as for Owen being quoted as he would only sign for NUFC if the reds did`nt come knocking , hardly a rebuff - it is his home town club after all - maybe its a bit like when Shearer had a meeting with Fergie and i am sure it would have gone along the lines of \" yes alex i will sign for you ONLY if NUFC dont come in for me \" hardly needs explaining what happened next does it - we bid a world record fee and got him - dont think NUFC were classed as a second option in the light of things , the reds did not Knock hard enough to welcome him back , cos i think he would have played for his Beloved L/pool for a lot less money than he will be getting - BUT if your NOT wanted why grovel when you can still play

We got him for at least 1 year full stop, we needed at least 2 forwards so its a good start, just hope we can make the 6th at least.

Correction Owen Is with US for FOUR years.
There is no clauses in his contact what so ever, who pays 16-18Mill for a player to play for a year? No One!
He is on a Huge Sum of money at newcastle, and we are just grateful he is playing for us.
As for the Shearer and Owen Patrtnership should work a treat, but come the end of the season am not sure how luque will play along side owen.
Only Only thing to say \"FANTASTIC SIGNING!\"

        Toon, Own, Owen!

          lets look at the facts

          1) paid 17m for a player who only cost real madrid half that a season ago and although scored goals for them could not command a regular place in the starting line up. (can someone explain how his value has increased 100 % in a deflated transfer market)

2)he is touted as being the 20 to 30 goal a year player they need. (michael owen has never scored 20 goals in a season ever ! suprised me that fact)

3)after paying 17m and adding to the clubs debt they will be goosed if the don\'t at least get a uefa place, fat freddy is taking one huge gamble maybe with the very existance of the club.

4)a hell of a lot of money to pay for a player who is extremely injury prone with a gammy hamstring.

to conclude, the gamble may well pay off but there is massive potential for it to go pearshaped.

ps. this is not just sour grapes from a sunderland fan but they would be real concerns if i was one of the unwashed from the lop sided cow shed up the road.

Jonny, just because a footballer signs a 4 year deal, it doesn\'t mean he\'ll be with you for 4 years. Theres loads of examples of this.

As for having no clauses in his contract, I\'d be very very surprised.

There will be more clauses in his contract than there is in all the department stores across the UK in December.

The best one\'s are when they are photographed kissing the clubs badge on their shirts and promising allegiance for however many years at the press conferences, 6 months later they are signing at another club and going through the same routine.

In my opinion it\'s all about money, money, money to the player, Owens not from the North East, He\'ll not give a toss about Newcastle United, why has he not thought of moving here before. Wonder what his wage demands are, Like Keith says though, they\'ll not be as big as Shearer\'s, unless he\'s had another pay rise

IF he only does his year,as reported, and scores his average number of goals(16),it works out at £1,062,500 per goal,to finish in the top 10.Is it worth it?

No sour grapes there then eh!
FACT-there is NO get out clause
FACT-Newcastle have just signed one of the best English centre forwards of all time, possibly to become the best ever considering he is currently only 17 goals short of Bobby Charltons all time record with possibly another 10 years of international football left in him.
FACT-The worst team in the history of the premiership(official)address there need for a centre forward by signing a player who could not get a game at Blackburn last year.

All this, there is a get out clause, there is not a get out clause.
How many of you were there at the signing of the contract?
The only way to get to know for sure is if someone can get a hold of a copy of the contract and post it on this board.
Lets all wait till the end of the season and see how he does.

its a 4 year contract so they still have something to sell in a year or 2. a 1 year contract and he could of walked on a free \'bosman\' transfer

just protecting an asset thats all

you don\'t see many \'paid for\' signings these days with less than at least 3 years on the contract

it\'ll go 2 ways, he\'ll be great in which case freddie can get his money back in 18months, or it\'ll be mediocre in which case it 16million or whatever divided by 4 as a depreciating asset on the balance sheet. the cost of a player is tax allowable and they can be accounted for as a depreciating asset (just like a company car)

the accountants will have it all stitched, look at a NUFC balance sheet in 3 years and one way or another it won\'t have cost them much, either by banking his depreciation against tax liabilities, or liquidating the asset at the best time financially.

just business at the end of the day, the football bit is just a necessary evil to keep the money machine turning as far as fat freddie is concerned

If we had won 2,3 or god forbid even 4 of the opening games do you think we\'d of signed him. I doubt it

                              why all the doubts?
A world-class striker with just under a goal every two games in international football, good combination of skill, pace and he has the ability to read the game. I no he might not of had the best of games at Real Madrid, But ha\'way look at their squad!, it was always going to be a test to get first team football!
I have no doubt of the impact Owen\'s return will have, both for club and country.
He is a great player and has scored a lot of goals in the Premiership and hopefully he can carry that on for Newcastle.
It\'s good to have him back in English football - and it will help him as well.He scored 16 goals last season which wasnt to bad for the amount of games he played.

Everyone forgets Owen scored 158 goals in 297 appearances for Liverpool, his first club.

and the funny thing is Owen scored more goals against Newcastle than any other team, but never played under current Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, who sold him for 8million shortly after taking over.

Dont Doubt the lad just yet man lads, Give Him a Few games!
