I\'ve e-mailed a lass in our Environmental Health Dept about this, Mark.

They often have cause (during the Summer) to erect notices along the South Shields coastline, warning people not to eat any collected shellfish from the area.

I\'ve asked her if this is a seasonal thing or just a precaution during the Summer months.

I\'ll post the reply....if I get one.


Personally, I generally go along with Jims\' maxim......re the \"R\" in the month.

My Grandad from Whitley bay always used to say that picking shell fish from our coast was fine as long as there was an \"R\" in the month. So keep off it from May till August.
I am sure there used to be warnings on ITV about the dangers of eating them during the summer.

sry tc but as far as i know jims right about the mussels and dont eat them during that period
something to do with the higher toxin levels and pollutants in the summer and they did use to warn you and notices were erected in certain parts
if im wrong ille hold my hands up but personally i wouldnt touch them

just been chattin with me dad and he told me that he used to pick mussel for eating up at boulmer but stopped because of the toxin levels
he said gone are the days when most of our daily products dont have some kind of chemical in them also the farmers use chemicals, machinery etc, so maybe some of these chemicals make there way from the earth, from rivers ,from us to the sea and make the mussel not good to eat
i tend to agree with him a bit
