Good point, perhaps we should try spoiling them with:
Grilled mussels in romesco sause or,
cozze con fagioli (mussels with cannilini beans) or,
mussels en croustade with leeks and white wine.
I also have a recepie for: mussel, leek and saffron soup but there may be a problem baiting the hook with this one lol
Anythings worth a try these days!!!!!!!!!Regards, Graham

We\'re told that \"variety is the spice of life\" so perhaps this applies to fish too.
Maybe we could do a deal like: they send up their fillets in return for a Rick Stein exotic seafood diet. I reckon the fish would be gettin\' the best deal but at least \"er indoors\" would believe that we\'d been fishing!Regards, Graham

Mussels tend to gather and breed at the exits to sewer outlet pipes and such like. Take a good look at what is floating in the water around where the mussels are then make your own decision. If you are still in doubt just throw caution to the wind and try some. Good Luck.As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible,
but P*****g everyone off is a piece of cake.

Mark absolutely nowt wrong with eating the mussells off our coast as long as like Mike says you check to make sure they are not situated near an out pipe. Before they put in a treatment plant I remember watching people collecting willicks (winkles) from Longhoughton where there is an sewer outlet pipe. A recipe for a nasty case of the sh*tes, and although the water that comes out of it now is supposed to be clean I will still not eat fish I catch from the Longhoughton area."And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"

My Grandad from Whitley bay always used to say that picking shell fish from our coast was fine as long as there was an \"R\" in the month. So keep off it from May till August.
I am sure there used to be warnings on ITV about the dangers of eating them during the summer.
Jim.Remember, some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.
