THIS IS A TRUE STORY.
About two years ago, I was fishing a Seaham Badger on a Friday Night, which I think was due to end at 2am.
Decided to walk down to fish the Hive right in front of the viaduct. Arrived and set up my gear.
Nothing happened for a few hours. All I will say is that it had to be one of the darkest nights I have ever witnessed. No moon and not one other light could be seen on the beach. I was alone with nearest life form, ( and I use the term lightly ) was my girlfriends brother Farmer Conway, about half a mile in the farmhouse.
Got to about 11pm standing looking up at my tip light, when without any warning, a voice behind me said (and I quote). " YOU CAUGHT OWT SON". Jesus Christ I nearly swallowed my tongue. I immediately turned round illuminating my expensive headlamp, expecting to see someone only feet away, due to the loudness and clearness of the voice. NOT A SOLE.
I scanned the beach from left to right illuminating it like London Blitz Searchlight. NOT A SOLE. By now I was thinking. Bring it on. What can a ghost do to you. NOT.
I cut my line and if anyone has ever used the steps up and down the cliff face into the Hive (about 200' from top to bottom) then you know it ain't no picnic, well I ran up them kit in hand.
Now you can believe it or not, but I'm a 6'3" copper, and have played rugby against Wade Dooley and Dean Richards at their prime, and have come up against some mean ugly mothers in my job, but I ain't affraid to tell you. I S**T myself that night. I have been back on a night session, but not alone.
I have looked for an explanation into the incident, including wind passing through the viaduct, but there weren't no wind. What I heard was a mans voice giving the impression that he was feet away from me.
Did I get any sympathy off Conway or back in the clubhouse. NOPELast edited by blackrat; 04-11-2012, 08:29 PM.

Never had an encounter yet with the other side but when I fly fished years ago i used to fish streams and rivers in the middle of nowhere for sea trout in the middle of the night on me jack. These places are totally isolated and take some getting to and all you can hear is the water trickling by and the odd rustle in the undergrowth. I'll be honest and say half the time I was s****g myself, never had a light either apart from matches to light a tab. I used to be looking around all the time, constantly on guard.

I always fish on my own, and some places do have a certain 'auroha' at night!
Cullernose, chems, dunstanbourgh to name a couple.
I'll never forget fishing the blast, years ago when the beach was stretched almost level between noses and hawthorne point. I was bang in the middle of the beach 1am, I was the only one there and with a good sea running had a few nice fish.
After casting out I looked up the beach toward hawthorne point, and in the moonlight I could see a dark figure on the beach near the waters edge. I paused and watched and could see whoever it was was walking toward me.
After a couple of minutes I was back at the waters edge landing a fish and looked up the beach, and sure enough whoever it was was closer, maybe 150yds.
I had my old Tilley going and was sat next to it watching my rods for a minute then flicked my miners lamp on to greet this person who was approaching! But as you've probably guessed there was no one there.
No way someone could have got past me without me seeing, and I stood ontop of the beach and scanned the area with my lamp, right up to the cliffs, nothing.
I've had other experiences, but nothing like this one.Stay safe!
Enjoy your fishing!
Take your rubbish home!

rivers.The best time for them was darkness,so that's when i fished.The thing
that i could'nt get used to,was when a big fish jumped out of the river, close
to where i'd be standing up to my waist, and splashed back in.I used to think
it was the creature from the black lagoon, ower here on holiday..lawdy i would
just about manage not to fill me trousers! I could handle the quiet ok,but big fish or monsters jumping out.....nee good
