I am up in Northumberland on holiday for a few days and last night I took my wife and son Adam to a local pub for a game of pool. There was one elderly guy sitting avidly watching the Birmingham match. As soon as my son took his coat off to reveal his NUFC shirt he asked my son if he had been to the match and proceeded to tell him how many players on the pitch were ex Newcastle players and also both managers. It began to dawn on me this guy looked very familiar but sitting in the pool room as he was he really just came across as maybe a regular. I asked him a leading question " do you live in the villiage " ? he said he was just visiting friends. We chatted about Allardyce and especially Hughton whom he certainly seems to admire. I turned to my wife and said " I think he may be Sir john Hall " and she said ask him. I decided to respect his anonymity. He didnt know who I was either I did get confirmation from the bar it was actually the man himself and that he enjoyed an odd pint watching the footy.
He really came across as very friendly and not in the least pompous or big headed and it was an unexpected pleasure to meet someone who has been such an influence on the North east.
I understand he is unwell and my family and I all wish him the best.
