I have seen some excellent pictures on here of some local marks. From the past few catch reports i've put up i have started taking pictures, only on a camera phone. But ive always liked the idea and is thinking of a half decent camera.

Are the compact digital cameras good enough? My shots will mainly be of Lands marks, in the sunset/sunrise sky, also day time.

The digital SLR cameras, to me are for the hardcore Photographers and very expensive for a dosey clot like me.

In my opinion mate digital compacts these days with a decent spec of say 14 million pixels are more than adequate for your needs and relatively cheap if you look around, and a lot less hassle to lug around.

Yes your probs right roncoe, i couldnt be doing hauling a tripod and camera about. Though they are quality bits of kit if you are reel serious.

              camera

cameras can only process info recieved so a camera with 5m pix and a good lens will beat a camera with 15m pix and a poor lens old saying- garbage in garbage out-if a lens distorts image a bad pic will be viewed so a slr with a half good lens will beat the best compact

Yep, there's a lot more to cameras than megapixels! As well as a good lens, you need a camera with a good processor - as above, a camera with 8-10mp & a good processor will out-perform something with twice the mp & a crummy processor, giving sharper images and less "noise" in low light etc.

If you're willing / able to spend a few hundred quid there are some very good compacts out there; Nikon, Canon, Panasonic & Olympus all do some very good cameras in the 200 - 400 squids price range, with good lenses & processors. I use a Leica D-lux3 (about 4 years old, now remodelled to the D-lux4) and it's damn near as sophisticated as the big Canon DSLR's that I use except it's small enough to shove in your pocket. Only downside is that it's not shock/waterproof like some of the cameras available, which might be a better choice if you want a camera to take fishing all the time.

a good compact digital will do for what you say are going to do with it, but don't expect to take close ups of anything a bit of a distance away, have a look at 1st camera.com
