Good shooting mate. If its any help the settings I will be using will be -

A tripod is essential for this, unless you can find a suitable steady surface to place your camera on.

      Manual/Bulb exposure

      F13

Cable release, may give the first one 5 seconds and then review it and adjust the exposure accordingly. If you have not cable release use your cameras timer to help eliminate vibration.

Manual focus - will probably set on infinity.

      ISO 100

      Noise reduction function on

Will also shoot in RAW + Jpeg (RAW can save the day on many occasions when a Jpeg shot will just have to be binned !!! )

The size of the crowd was just crazy and also dangerous !!! Only managed to see 3 of the displays and had no chance of taking any long exposure shots on the night. Hope the rest of you fared better than me.

Did take a few shots through the day though and will wedge them on here later.

We had a look down and it was a bit mental in places with crowds, dangerous in some places. The riverside path especially so, narrow path, pitch black with the river right on your doorstep and people pushing past each other in both directions. Sorry to you keen photographers out there but people with tripods were a right bloody pain in the backside aswell, propping them up right in the middle of the walkways then whining on when people were squashing past and bumping them, bit common sense required, there wasn't enough space to be hoying tripods up.
Anyway, the whole spectacle, bit of a do about nothing imo. First time i've seen it all but don't think i'd bother again.

Yep you are right about the tripods, common sense required. Thats why mine stayed in its cover !!!! It would have been a trip hazard to the crowds.

Did see one women injured when due to crowd pressure she was pushed over. See the organisers got bad press on the local BBC news and rightly so.

I for one will not be back either if it is repeated.

One of the benefits of being an "auld timer". Left the car in the garage and got the bus through to Durham. Took this through the bus window.

Had a wander about before darkness and took a few shots

This was one of the displays that I wanted to photograph but had no chance of getting near it in the evening

Here is the only shot I took of the cathedral display, had to put away my tripod after this.

Great pics there . Been there tonight (Saturday) and never seen so many people in one place before, palace green was full of people and the police closed it off till the crowds dispersed.
Still worth it to see the snow globe in the market square

Yep the snow globe was something else. Just managed the one hand held shot of that and it is fairly poor. Here it is anyway.

I have a feeling it will not be repeated due to all of the safety issues.
