Claims that Scotland would lose thousands of jobs if the Trident nuclear weapons system is taken out of service or moved elsewhere have been thrown into question following an admission by the Ministry of Defence that only 520 civilian jobs at HM Naval Base Clyde are dependent on Trident.

The figure was released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in response to a freedom of information request from Scottish CND, who asked the Ministry to provide a definitive up-to-date number of jobs at the Clyde base, which includes the Faslane submarine port and the Coulport nuclear weapons store, which directly rely on the Trident strategic weapons system.

MoD replied that “there are 520 civilian jobs at Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) Clyde, including Coulport and Faslane, that directly rely upon the Trident programme”. MoD employs 159 personnel at the Clyde base, with private contractors Babcock Marine and Lockheed Martin UK Strategic Systems employing 254 and 107 people respectively. The majority of the jobs are for engineering and science specialists.
Ah well, as long as long as you or yours aren't one of the 520 eh?

Any idea (even a rough guesstimate) how many other businesses depend directly on the 520 spending their wages in the local area?

Haven't you heard of "Extrapolation"? No? Just google it.

But then maybe not, as long as "I'm alright Jack"

I'm sure the 520 (as well as the several thousands depending on the 520's wages) are very supportive of your opinions

Not quite sure how you manage to extrapolate that 520 wages can support thousands of other wage earners - perhaps you googled it!

Anyway it was just meant to be a humorous comment to go with a nice photo, no need to get all hot and bothered over it.

think we would let you keep them, first place anyone would attack if a skirmish broke out, they certainly don't do much for the lovely scenery in the photo though, think they would of found somewhere not so picturesque to put them, but then again English governments have been using Scotland for trying things out for years, yae caen keep your haggis as weel bloody awful, with all this Political correctness going on think people have forgot about havin a larf

Indeed Alan, just a laugh - for us anyway!

Aye haggis is an acquired taste, but I love it. Whisky, now that is a Scottish delicacy I can well do without, makes me boak! .

Me and my dearest have just left the Piper Pub in George Square, Glasgow after filling ourselves with beautifully prepared Haggis.
It went down very well with a very cold Guinness for yours truly and a crisp Savignon Blanc for the boss, shame it rained all the way back to the Hotel but who cares, we love the city.

                      nice pic.
jock independence? if it ever happens it won't be for a very very long time, certainly not in your lifetime anyway
and, if it ever does, there won't be job losses at the sub base or locally as England will just keep the area as part of the UK, bit like Cyprus, so I wouldn't bother debating job loss numbers

Sorry Mark, it was only meant to be an appointment with a Log cabin manufacturer and back home same day, but the Boss came along for the run out, then decided she fancied a bit of food and then drink, and then a overnight stay.

I apologise for not getting in touch.

The bags are packed for France, please come along if your good at renovating farm buildings
A lot of roof work this trip, see you soon
