  • Any Tarantula keepers on NESA?

Been looking and reading up for a lot of years, kept holding off to be sure it wouldn't be a fad/novelty interest. Finally gave in and bought 2 spiderling Tarantula's last week. Fascinating creatures despite not doing much. I'd debated a full grown one straight off but decided that I'd be missing the pleasure of seeing them grow and develop, though I do have a juvenille/sub-adult on my birthday shopping list for September.

    So, anyone here also keepers?

Reptiles for me mate, never been a big fan of arachnids although I did have a scorpion once.

Cool, we're looking into getting a Beardie soon, had most of the setup since last summer but space was a problem at that time....

Do like the spiders though, really hooked on them now, just glad my wife likes pretty much all creatures and critters so there's no issues getting oddballs.

We have a bearded dragon 'SPIKE' dead original name. Really easy to keep and very tame. Always been a bit wary of spiders and thought about grabbing the bull by the horns so to speak and getting a tarantula, but big boss says NO . Have also kept Salamanders, Fire and Tiger.

Thanks for the replies (and laughs!) lads.

Got the tank mostly setup this morning for the dragon, though had to do some DIY work on the alcove wall in the living room! Flippin measured twice and still found the gap was a fraction too narrow for the big tank - bit plaster removal, quick thin skim to smooth and then paint and the bugger fits now!!
Heating and lighting all up and running, thermostat for the heater and timer for the UV tube kicking in perfectly - just checking the heat balance to see if the temp' probe needs budging around a bit or not to keep the heat gradiated but not too cool at one end.

If it's all balancing out nice, then off to see about a young dragon tomorrow or Saturday, had already talked to the place we're getting one from last Autumn about them when I was initially planning on getting one (proper place, not a pets@home type shop) and popped a mail yesterday to check he had some youngsters, ages/sizes etc.

A close friend of mine had a pet tarantula called pandora which lived for 16 years and just died earlier this year, she was devistated...
Not one for pets myself, altho i used to keep frogs and newts as a kid and had tropical fish.
It's a thin line that seperates an Angler from a madman standing on the beach in january at midnight in -5 degrees with a northerly wind blowing in your face

                        Hello mate
i used to keep spiders years ago including mexican red knees, curley hair, chilea rose etc but now keep crested geckos or cresties and breed them, i also have gargoyle geckos as well. I used to breed loads of leopard geckos as well. I have 6 adult cresties and 10 babys and loads of eggs in the incubator off them.

I like the look of gecko's, have a friend that breeds them too, but they seem to spend too much time hiding - though most of the spiders are much the same too!

Picked up some more tarantulas, been getting them from TheSpiderShop:- - Suppliers of Arachnids and other quality Invertebrates guy there is really quick to offer help and advice, of course that means I've been shopping again with him - got 4 more, a spiderling, 2 juveniles and a sub-adult.
