  • Sat Nav, ideally handheld GPS ability..

Just interested before I tout this as an idea for a bit of fishing related, yet non-fishing fun for members and their non-fishing families...

Can we get an idea please, of who has gps, hand held or otherwise, that can navigate to longtitude and latitude locations?

I'm just polling a concept in my mind, what would help is
    GPS - Y or N
    Transport - Y or N
Local Area (approx) - what can you, or are you able to travel within?
Mobility issues - important to many and this is a key factor for me despite not being an issue personally...
Family aspect - rate 1-10 in importance for a "non-fishing, yet related activity" that has a family interaction aspect. 10 highest of course...

I'm aiming at pitching something at the local tackle dealers, replies on here rock, if the mods could help me compile some data then mail me and I'll go into more detail with my concept - it's nesa, it's fishing, it's supporting our charities and it's most of all bringing the family in to have some fun. Mod's, email is cool anytime - I may be slow the next couple of days (3 servers to build).....

got gps on the iphone with several apps - tom tom for in the car, memory map, which gives you OS maps, and other just basical lat/long/speed/bearing apps

also got a magellan meridian platinum (best hand held GPS made ever IMHO) I can load navionics charts to it for boaty stuff, or road maps for drivy stuff, or OS maps for other stuff

    Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

Aye, you'd need it seeing that dinghy you're sorting out ;-) Looking good mind, was stuck for work, at work, so had a read back through the updates. Glad the bogs are near me, had bladder issues constantly!!!!

Is there a central mailbox for the mods as a whole, a dizzy-list? PM me if there is, i'd like to throw this one to the wolves but I'd sooner the meat was tenderised first.....

To be honest, in this age of technology and with all our good intents aired on this site, I have to say I'm a bit let down at the lack of responses yet many views. I got my Garmin hand-held as a birthday present (£60 odd, never bought a multiplier for that in my life), I've had a load of fun with it via the GeoCaching website. My kids are into it, my wife is too..... I seriously want to pitch something that has many benefits - rnli local business, us, etc etc etc... but it needs interest guys!

Other than the normal sat- nav, phone etc I use memory map with a rechargeable blue tooth GPS unit, this is used for 4x4 off road and fishing marks, I run it on a small note pad, I have had a look at Quo mapping, looks good and cheaper than MM. Many advantages to these systems, such as sending routes, marks, in a file via e-mail.

cheers loopy. Looking around, within reason and if a clue is left, then there's a wealth online from google maps/earth, flashearth (which I admit I love) and more.

I was on a bit of a rant with my last comment, some geocaching moderator (not nesa of course) who lives no where near the North East had a rip at me and wouldn't hear me out when I had valid points. Tch. At least the mods on here are sensible (thanks guys, do you need the sort code again for a direct deposit to my account?).

Serious question - mod bods, is there a way of making a post, thread or forum purely members only?
If you can give me a single members only post? If so, I'll drop a container with purely a log-book and a pencil so people can sign it, maybe some bits for kids, in time for the coming weekend. I'll post the GPS location with a hint to make it easy to find. It'll be coastal and sorry but local to me off the Arriva bus routes as I've no other transport for a while.... Can we see how it goes?
I'll put in a little pack of swivels and other tackle box bits and bobs for the "first to find" to grab.

If 5 members here find it the first day it is available, then I'll send a fiver the RNLI. If people enjoy this then please say so, the more attention, the more it is likely to raise both in funds to the rnli and in interest in this group and our vested interests as a whole.

Only rules are that if you find it you must both sign the log AND post on here with the name you signed as; if you take something from the box, then add something as a swap of about the same value; take your family if you can and make it fun; leave only footprints in the area (no rubbish dropping).
