totaly agree mark the non smokers should sit elsewhere as i find the lack of smoke and high morals puts me off my meal :P

in an age where there are a lot more serious things which could be put to rights i find this debate stupid ,if they get there ban and revenue from cigs goes down will smokers get the blame for higher taxes on something else

Whilst on the subject, has anyone else noticed the increased number of anti-smoking ads on the telly ? it seems that every other ad is an anti-smoking one. Is this just co-incidence or is there a hidden agenda !

i agree that we will all die at some point..
but sooner or later is mostly up to the individual.
how you choose to live your life is the main bearing factor.

non smokers choose not to smoke......and not to passive smoke

          heres a question for smokers

How would you explain to your children while on your death bed that you are dying because of something you had control over?

          smoking doesnt just cause cancer.....

smokers dont like the anti smoking ads because everything in them is fact and happens in real life...

the truth is if you smoke......maybe not now...but in later life you are setting yourself up for a life full of smoking related diseases

the same goes for a number of things

the combination of poor health in general, obesity, heavy drinking and smoking means a ticking timebomb of heart disease, heart failure, respiratory disease and cancer....

is this really how you want to live your life?

its like sleeping with someone who has aids without any protection sooner or later you will get aids....

smoking kills .....its not IFs or BUTs its FACT

          mands

ok im ready for the onslaught of abuse now!!!!! hahahahahaha

Hi Mands. No onslaught from me. I am a smoker and you have raised some good points. its all about freedom of choice to do what I want to do when I want to do it.Lets just look at a few other issues:
1). Binge Drinking - I live in the middle of Whitley Bay and the weekends are something you have to witness to comprehend. I have hosed vomit from my yard walls and garage doors, I have broken up fights outside my home, I have lost count of the number of times that I have cleared up broken bottles, beer cans, wine bottles, pizza boxes etc, etc, from my front garden. I have NEVER seen television adverts telling me how bad drinking is for my health or other peoples health.
2). Road traffic - go into any town centre and you are inhaling carbon monoxide from buses, cars, vans and wagons. Surely this is bad for us as well ? but I have never seen adverts telling us not to drive or go into any area where there is traffic.
3). Industry - If you leave near any sort of industrial estate, the chances are you you will be inhaling some sort of obnoxious chemical.I have never seen any adverts telling us not to inhale as we pass these places.
4). Food - God only knows what risk we are taking in simply having a meal these days. Food is so full of additives and preservatives and all manner of chemicals that must do us no end of harm but I have never seen any adverts telling us not to eat !
This government and previous governments were quite happy for me to go down a coal mine for 23 years without telling me the risks regarding inhaling coal dust, stone dust etc, etc,. I am aware that there were other careers I could have chosen but thats where the money was at the time. So can you see my vewpoint Mands ?. I smoke because I enjoy it and I go fishing because I enjoy it, there both my choice and we smokers have the same rights of choice as non smokers.I have said in a previous post that I will not smoke in anyones home/space who do not smoke and I think these are good concessions on my part. Living life itself is fraught with dangers and I am sick and tired od seeing anti-smoking adverts everytime I turn on the telly or listen to the radio. Nothing personal Mands and I welcome you to the board. You have come to the right place for good debates.

            Cheers

              yes understood.....
we all have rights..and the smoking ban is enforcing the non smokers right to a smoke free enivronment and enforcing a childs right to a smoke free enivronment is this not a good thing??

the benefits far outway the inconvenience of a smoker
unfortunately not every smoker is as considerate as you...gag1

i dont agree with the amount of control the gov has, i agree there are more important issues for them to deal with ....
although reduce the amount of smokers and u reduce the amount of money spent on looking after people with smoking related diseases..........
as usual its all about money. where to get it and where not to spend it!!!

being a mother of 2 and having someone smoke around my children sickens me...........a child shouldnt smell of smoke..IMHO

these days smokers are the minority and as always majority rules
              except on fox hunting

for every £100 it cost to treat a smoker on the NHS, a moker will have put in £350 in revenue. We are subsidising the health service

                dying on your deathbed etc....

probably the same way as I would tell my daughter that there was this drunk driver that mowed me down because there are no restrictions on how much alcohol people are allowed to buy,

probably whilst the guy in the next bed tells his daughter that he is dying of coronary heart disease because he spent his life eating crap ready meals, taking no excercise, and binging on high fat high salt high sugar snacks

but the guy in the next bedd who is getting no expense spared treatment on the nhs has contributed nothing in revenue from his unhealthy lifestyle,

won\'t be long before deaths from these lifestyle choices far ourwiegh smoking related deaths - in scotland they already do. What do you propose then?? Ban fast food?? Ban snack foods and ready meals, or better still add a 70%tax to the price.

I know a lot of people who are equally vehement about having smokers around children and I could not agree more, yet these people are happy to see their children sit in front of a playstation several hours a day, eating rubbish - that, IMHO is a bigger timebomb than smoking.

as for the advertising, funny that they don\'t show us adverts of fatty arteries caused by obesity, livers looking like sponge from alcohol abuse, kidney like walnuts from the same thing, non-functioning pancreas\' frome excessive sugar etc etc etc etc.

A close friend works in cardio-thoracic theatre. She smokes. She sees far worse fatty arteries in non smokers than smokers

I might smoke, but I am a hell of a lot healthier than a large number of people I know - children and adults.

it was about smoking, but \"unhealthy lifestyle choices\" has crept in

so fatties will have to eat traffic lights then!

Just putting it in perspective, Mands

Lol.....nobody wants to shoot you.......everybody is entitled to their opinion.

This next bit isn\'t directed at Mands.......just me thinkin\' out loud.....

At the risk of this becoming like the \"hunting with hounds\" topic.......gottta ask, What will be the next thing to be banned.......eating a Bigmac in public ?...........no drinking in pubs and clubs?........sitting still for too long in public places?........a weekly quota of miles you can drive in your car?

errr.. all of the above I\'d guess if he gets another term

the mileage quota isn\'t as daft as it sounds. THE DoT has already done a study to look at the possiblity that the annual mot can form a \'tax return\' of sorts so when you get your car mot\'d shortly afterwards you get a tax bill

on the healthy lifestyle question, why, if smoking is so bad for you, do the french who smoke far more than the brits live on average 10 years longer. The answer lies in their eating habits

so if the government enforced healthly eating more than persecuting smokers, they\'d get to keep the revenue from smokers and reduce the number of hospital beds needed

sitting still for too long in public places?.
i think thats called loitering with intent in some areas lol

its like sleeping with someone who has aids without any protection sooner or later you will get aids....
no disrespect but you can in no way compare smoking to aids ,passive smoking may be bad for people ,but the non smokers have a choice as to wether they stay in the same areas as smokers, why should the smoker always move along,i remember years ago when tv and billboards overflowed with smoking ads ,it was trendy blah blah, now its bad for you ,why becouse some egghead came along and said so,apples are good for you but the dentists now say the acid is bad for your teeth, nicotine kills you ,if this is the case why are all the cures nicotine based ???,the line has got to be drawn as to what a person is allowed and not allowed to do under his/her god given rights, thats the issue here not wether its bad for you or not

example ..if you had a number of fishing related accidents would this then make fishing bad for you and open to the people who would see it banned, a bit extreme ok but you see my point ,people have rights and no one should be allowed to come along and say hey you cant do that its bad for you ,if this was the case wed all be living in plastic bubbles and feeding through a tube
                              cheers Bri

one of the supressed reports from the american tobacco industry in 70\'s, when they first cottened on to the harmful effects, listed the addatives that go into cigarattes as being highly carginogenic.

basically stuff they stick in to stop manufactured tabs from going out once lit, cos they want to sell more.

                                roll yer own!
