Not all farmers support the hunt mind Red5.

I used to shoot over 1200 acres of farmland and the farmer wouldn\'t let the hunt anywhere near. The amount of damage they caused to nesting pheasant and partridge far outweighed anything the local foxes could achieve in a season. He actually asked us not to target them as they did no harm, and in his eyes, weren\'t vermin at all (it was an arable farm by the way, probably different if he had kept chickens etc)

The gamekeeper on the neighbouring shoot was very old school (wiping out birds of prey, badgers etc) and he had an almost racial-like hatred of foxes. If they couldn\'t be shot or hunted, he would set locking snares and other nasty (illegal) traps. Although I strongly disagree with his barbaric methods, his job (and home) depended on results (ie how many birds were successfully released for the season).

5150, you\'re dead right and I\'m as guilty as anybody when it comes to playing God. I\'ve taken literally hundreds of pigeon and rabbits in the past in the name of \"pest control\", but it\'s not just direct hunting that upsets the ecosystem. Development - houses, roads, schools, shops, factories, all destroy habitat at a greater rate than anything else we can throw at it.

The only speices that seem to thrive nowadays are rats and cockroaches, maybe someones trying to tell us something??

I agree with the fact not all farmers agree with the hunt Rob. Seen the damage meself to winter wheat after 20 horses and dozens of hounds have churned the land up. Some gamekeepers are of that ilk also but they cannot justify keeping a job/house thru the inhumane treatment of animals. It\'s like global warming, do we keep on spewing out harmful emmissions in the name of progress at the expense of all other creaures on the planet or do we try to keep a happy medium?
Shooting vermin I.e pigeons/rabbits isn\'t the same as chasing an animal over miles of land and then tearing it to bits. By the way did you get me PM the other day about the Weirauch?
"And I looked, and behold'a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was death, and hell followed with hi, and power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger, and with the beasts of the earth"

not heard that one yet, much more money in the shooting game so be interested to see how that progresses, can\'t imagining it having a massive mount od success as the positives far outweigh the negatives, and shooting is only a _VERY_ small step from angling. they cannot really target one and not the other, but hey george and tony have god on their side so who knows...

I can hear tony now \"God says I have to stop you all shooting and fishing, even though his son did a bit of fishing, and I have to increase all your taxes topay for the privelege, in order balance the lost revenue\"

my post was a bit tongue in cheek mark , there is no question who is in their sights next and they have said so . I believe you missed the extended debate on foxhunting a good while back and a lot of the members thought that hunting was totally seperate from fishing , and I hope they are right ! But , is it fair for a democratic society to \"Ban\" things a minority does ? It could be argued that cutting an animals throat to bleed to death is outrageous , but it happens EVERY day in our slaughterhouses by Rabbis and for Halal meat for the muslim population . I do not in any way advocate foxhunting but if some people wish to hunt , it\'s none of my business !! There will now be a load of trouble ( from law abiding people who happen to put food on our table btw ) , To the people who wanted a ban I say well done in your efforts . Just hope is was worth it .

cant say ive tried fox ?

you cant really throw the farmers in with the hunt mob as a lot of farmers are against it as well as members of the public, ive no objection to meat prepared as part of a religious thing, ive seen it done and IMO its still a lot less barbaric than fox hunting, shooting and fishing are not the same but then again are ,while shooting is a humane way of control as is fishing in some aspects they differ in a lot of ways, the revenue from these 2 sports will make it a hell of a difficult thing to ban
ive always said if you need to control foxes then shoot them ,but that said its already been pointed out on here that nature maintains a balance if the fox eats rabbits and theres no foxes you get more rabbits so why not just leave well alone,if fox was edible then fair enough but as its nothing but sport and not very sporting at that from the foxes point of view then im glad the ban is going ahead ,if the fox was hunted fairly say 1 hound 1 fox (my moneys on the fox) then i wouldnt have a problem with it
                                cheers Bri
