Saltersgate Farmers hunt was on yesterday and not being at the caravan as it was my daughters birthday I thought I would take the grandson Lewis, who is thirteen down to see how he got on as it is not a very big show and only a couple of dozen dogs enter the scurry. First job enter photographs into the relative sections, then Lewis and Fergus had a go at the agility course, not done it since last year, rosette for clear round, then a couple of events in the fun dog show, 4th in the junior handler, thought he did better myself, and won the best cross breed. Then off the scurry, not the hardest of courses, down the course where two big rolls of hay about 20 metres apart, dummy chucker stood back from them and threw one dummy behind each hay roll, then dog had to retrieve dummies in a specific order. Then about 30 yards away there was a couple of ordinary hay bales with a dummy placed without dog seeing it being done, you then had to retrieve that dummy. When we arrived quite a few dogs had been, and a few had had a few goes, had a quick look at the score board none over mid 20’s seems they had a problem retrieving dummies in correct order “black labs”. Lewis and Fergus had go and scored max points 30 straight away, this awakened the other competitors and a few more had yet another go, after consultation with Lewis he said I could have a go, well I only scored 28pts well in 2nd place though. Two owners kept running their black labs until they eventually got max points, so I had another go and got max points. Four handlers three dogs in run off. I went first and F did a perfect run, the two black labs went next and where absolute rubbish, then it was Lewis and F, they got the max as well. As F was getting tired decided on joint winners, Lewis also getting a nice bag of goodies and yet another rosette as the best junior handler. Off to the photography tent, Lewis got a 1st & 2nd in the same section (bird life) with a photo of a barn owl and a kingfisher, I did nothing in that section. I did quite well in others three 1st a 2nd and two 3rds. Had a great day and a right laugh on way back, decided to go over the moors, Lewis waving at everyone and any car he saw trying to get them to wave back, not many did. Day slightly spoilt when I got a txt from the warden at the nature reserve, Lewis and myself have been carving mythical creatures in various places so they can be used as nature trails etc over the holidays, unfortunately two tops, shaped and painted like big mushrooms, had been removed probably over Friday night. Most think it is down to the kids that come in regularly to get drunk and take whatever they take, but I have a feeling they where taken by somebody who fancied them for their garden.
