  • mileage rates if you use your own car for work

do yo use your own car for your job and claim mileage back?

the current rates of 40p per mile for the 1st 10000 miles and 25p per mile for every mile after that in any tax year was brought out in 2002. fuel prices are once again rising every day making it extremely dificult for drivers using their own vehicles for there job to fuel and maintain their vehicles to an acceptible standard. we need a realistic rate now !!!

Last time I claimed travel expenses (not too long ago) it was 13p a mile for teachers. Mind you I'll soon have a bus pass lol

They tried to tell my wife she was ok using the car without having the insurance changed to include using for work. Needless to say they were told not to ask her again unless they paid the difference in insurance cover. I wonder how many people do it without the correct cover, judging by the one's I know that "Don't need it" it must be quite a few still it's not like it will cost the employer anything when they get fined is it lol.

Jim, most insurance companies don't charge for adding business use - certainly the level required by local government officers. Its just a matter of ringing the company and asking them to change it. I imagine it would be different if it was for something high risk but from my experience business use to cover journeys to and from meetings and carrying colleagues has been free.

It must have changed Ali, this was a good few years ago now and we were told it would be extra. I can't remember how much but we were'nt going to pay it lol. There were others (two I think) that enquired and they were told it would be extra too. The fact that people are using the car for work should still be on the insurance though, whether it costs or not as it could result in not being insured if you have an accident.

Insurance isn't something to mess with...always best to make sure you have given them all the information otherwise you have wasted your time paying for the policy because it is worthless if you have to claim and haven't got your cover right. Don't always go for the cheapest quote either as often you only get the bare minimum and it can be a nightmare if you have to claim.

Too right mate, it's not a problem to the local authority though and they won't give you any info about it. Yvonne was only delivering some letters to the post office each night on her way home until I found out she needed to be insured for it. It was stopped imediately with no arguement from her bosses, they knew, but they didn't tell her

As far as the cheapest quote goes, we have used the same holiday insurance for quite a few years now, it isn't the cheapest but I know if there is a problem they will be there if needed. I get sick of hearing about how little people have paid for cover I would rather have confidence in my insurers than another thirty or fourty quid in my pocket, especially when I'm a long way from home.

                insurance

its my experience that most insurers do charge for business use.they dont miss any opportunity or reason to put your premium up, and presumably their year end bonus also
