  • Free firewall

I've been using the firewall on my wireless router for a while now but I don't need to be wirelessly routed now .

So as I'm going hardwire ,which free firewall would people recommend?

depending on what else you use a pc for, this might sound drastic... you thought about ditching windows and installing ubuntu instead??

linux - does everything you'd want, open office is free (MS office clone), as is a photohop version, no viruses, no spyware, rock solid stable and totally Free

      (did I mention its free!)

is linux easy straight forward to install can it be used on most computers.

and whats it like for downloading programmes are most compatible with linux.

is there any disadvantages with linux. thanks john

if you download the cd - Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

then boot your pc from it, there's an option to run ubuntu without installing on your hard disk if you want to just give it a whirl to see if you like it. If you want to install its soooo easy

boot from cd, click the option that says install.....

go make a cuppa, takes about 10mins to install, doesn't ask for your life history just asks you to set up an admin username and password... then off you go

Firefox is the default browser, so everything internet wise is absolutely the same as windoze - just faster and safer

if you want to download stuff - music, movies and the like its just the same, use the same tools as you do now, there's bit torrent apps, usenet apps, and all the rest

apps wise, they have to be linux programs you run, but unless you have some specialist PC programs you use all the time, there'll be a linux equivalent, and 99% of the time totally free

open office is a free clone of microsoft office thats compatible with all your MS office documents, you get a picture editor built in (built like a cut down photoshop) you get all the usual media players...

interface is different, looks more like a mac than a PC, (or more like windows 7 seeing as microsoft have copied huge amounts of the interface from both the mac and linux)

download the iso, burn it to a cd and stick it to one side. Next time windows ****s up and you've got to re-install (which folks seem to have to do a fair bit with windoze) install the ubuntu first, if you don't like it stick the windows back on instead

you can even install it onto a usb memory stick if you want and run the pc from that, if you want windows unplug the memory stick and boot from the hard drive, if you want ubuntu shove the memory stick back in and boot from that

and in another roundabout way, choose/configure your router well and you'll have a hardware firewall - much better!

most do what they say on the tin.

bt ones are good if you can pick one up, and have good hardware firewall and a few other toys to play with which are useful if you want to set up a server for gaming/web hosting
