Was supposed to be going digging and fishing with Phil185 today but when I jumped in the car this morning the bloody clutch broke. I think the clutch cable has snapped due to the cold so now I've got to spend all day trying to sort this out instead of fishing, gutted!

Garage says it needs a whole new clutch and can't be done until after Christmas, nightmare!

What's the car? Clutch cable will be instant "SNAP!" and peddle to the floor. Clutch itself will make a hell of a noise. Other hand is the thrust bearing/lever arm has slipped - this happened on my old Porsche and it was nowt more than a bit of time under the car to loosen the bolt, re-allign it on the teeth after pushing the thrust bearing back and then tighten it back up.

Get another opinion. you should be able to locate each end of the cable and pull on it to check that within minutes as a starter.

I've done clutches on my old Chevette, 2x Cavaliers (1 mk2 and 1mk3) and they're not always as bad as it sounds - especially on newer cars.

snapped clutch cable doesnt mean your clutch is gone mate ,if iot was working ok before it snapped its not the clutch its the cable get someone else whos not a greedy money grabber to look at it before you get a clutch

Unlike what I originally thought the clutch cable is fine. It is the diaphragm spring in the clutch which has gone. I'm good friends with the garage owner so I trust I'm not getting ripped off, it's just unfortunate it's happened now. The clutch was the original 306 HDi clutch which Peugeot had fitted and it's lasted 120,000 miles so thats not bad going I suppose.
