    Another one for the boffins...

am tinkering about with a couple of differing projects and I'm wondering what the best route is to maximising your google profile is?

is it all about the key words/meta tags etc or are there other tricks of the trade?

    cheers in advance

meta tags are probably bottom of the list of the SEO (search engine optimisation list)

a good linking strategy & rich content are the most important bits

but there's loads and loads of little sneaks that are worth throwing in as well

am I right in thinking that linking is the process of me saying to another site I'll post a link to your site if you link to mine and so on?

what about website addresses added to forum profiles and the like - does that count?

yup. stick a web address in forum profiles, get a link back to your site on as many other sites as you can. try and get the link text to include a keyword or 2 if poss

google sees links to your site like a vote for your site - the more votes the higher you get

if the site that has a link to your site is itself a high ranking site for that particular set of search terms, that is like double or treble votes

don't go the daft route of thinking that hiding loads and loads of the same keywords on apage somewhere willg et you more attention - it will but they'll assume your spamming and delete you from google altogether. I did some work for BMW a couple of years ago, they'd tried spamming keywords to get a higher ranking on google - google deleted the entire BMW domain from its search results

BMW offered them a blank cheque to get re-instated google said no ta, we don't need the dosh, but did a agree to wiping the slate clean and letting them start from scratch again

with a new site, it'll take a few weeks till you start seeing any results in google rankings, then a slow move upwards if you do it right.

I went to town on the optimisation of the blog and get top spot on loads of different searches now, and page 1 on loads and loads more. Got to the point now that I make a new blog posts, its usually on google within an hour or 2

can make a big difference what you create the site in as well

beware on-line build you own site things, usually a pile of pish when it comes to SEO. decent CMS systems aren't too bad though

By that do you mean use the key words I've already listed on the actual pages of the website itself?

keywords - stick your self in the chair of a potential googler. what are the words they are likely to be typing into google when you want your site to be in the results, preferably at the top

those words/phrases form the heart of your keyword strategy use em everywhere and as widely as you can. even name your files&images with them, use them in titles and subtitles and in the body of the text as much as you can

don't daft things like having some white text on a white background so they appear invisible to the user thinking that google will think they are great. they will spot that a mile away!

Its the reason sometimes the intro text on websites appears really verbose -

"welcome to acme big brown widgets. We make the best big brown widgets of any big brown widgets manufacturer in big brown widget land
to see more of out big brown widgets click on the one of the big brown widget links or click on picture a big brown widget....

cheesy, but you get the idea! search engines love that sort of stuff though

just been having a poke through our stats. google really loves us now, and thinks we are so uber important, almost any old ****e I happen to gob off about go straight in to number one almost!

made a post just the other day entitled "caulking a wooden deck"

try googling that one. given how many boat sites there are out there and wooden boat repairing/building related forums and sites guess whos' number 1!!!

down side is anyone tha was hoping for something useful will probably be a bit dissapointed

Cheers Mark - food for thought there...I put myself to bed early for fear I'd be dreaming of keywords if I kept myself at it for much longer ("cod" "fishing" and so on )

BTW you came up 2nd on the list when I googled you before ...best get back at it
