    Question for the boffins...

Got a spreadhseet which I want to hyperlink on a webpage. The free package I'm using won't let the file be used in the "normal" download style IE I can't upload the file to the site and then allow users to download it

Anyone know a good online file sharing scrinson that allows me to use their hosting facilities and also allows the downloader not to be bombarded with ads, and does not require the downloader to have to install additional software to access the file

    any of that make sense?

    Cheers in advance
    Ooh a new vid!

When you say hyperlink on your page do you mean to right click on the link and save the excel sheet to their computer or do you want to actually be able to view the excel sheet in the web page?

If it's the first then you need to host the file on your web server and then just link to it on the page. If you pay to host your website they should also be able to host the file.

If you want to view the sheet in the page it's more complicated. If your stuck pm me and I'll explain over the phone.

      Cheers Broony

Am on the freebie at the mo so there is minimal hosting allowed in the package

what I mean is to have a hyperlink that goes to another hosting site that allows said file to be downloaded from there but in it's .xls form - I have found a few but they're very ad intensive on the free packages (as one would expect really)

I guess I'll just have to petition the clerb for funds if they want ad free hassle

if you link directly tot he URL of the excel file, you won't see any ads or anything, it'll just grab the file

          Yep.

Wherever the website is hosted - you say club so I'm guessing its the fishing club's website, you should also have some space for other files.

Who hosts the club site and who manages the club's pages?

They should have FTP access to the webspace and if you have a FTP client its just a case of dragging and dropping the excel file onto your webspace. Then you would link to it.

Again drop me a PM if you want it expalining in a bit more detail or in a more friendly way.

It seems the club site (if it's the one in your signature) is hosted by webeden. On their support pages I found this:

For some reason it wont let me copy and paste

Website builder Support | SiteMaker Support Page | WebEden.co.uk

In the categories drop down list choose:

            Adding and uploading your files

In the answers below click on:

How do I let visitors download files from my site

It then descibes how to add a link and to upload the file you want to make available.

IF it's not this site you are talking about then let me know.

It is the club site as you have found through webeden...however because I am currently operating on the free package I am unable to allow downloads from the site itself

To be honest this may just be the catalyst needed to subscribe and upgrade the current package

Cheers for taking the time mate - appreciated

Tony, who is your ISP? Most give you a small amount of webspace... you'd just need to ftp the file upto that.

                      Cheers for the info

I've managed to use a 3rd Party File sharing site for the purpose of the exercise at the moment - but as I said it's very ad intensive...nevertheless it suits the purpose at the minute

Def no user downloading capabilities on my current package (I can upload but they can't download)

If anything the exercise has highlighted the need to subscribe to give the greater range of services from your ISP - which I think I will on one of my other projects

                      Cheers for the input all

Dunno if you can hyperlink directly to them, but certainly you can share files using Box.net | Simple Online Collaboration: Online File Storage, FTP Replacement, Team Workspaces ~ Free Version I've only used it a couple of times and just sent the folder links to people when needed.

Just had a proper ganders at this and it seems VERY reasonable indeed...

...did you use the design package to make your sites as well?

                          Cheers

I dont use any online design stuff. I always use a template and upload and modify or write it all from scratch. I know thats not the best option for everyone but it works for me.

Most web building software looks bad to be honest, best paying someone to design you a simple site. Look on the famous auction site for people offering website building services, sometimes you can get good deals.

Then just ask them to install basic modules for uploading photos, or setting up a forum etc.

If you need any help just let me know and I can try and point you in the right direction.

Instead of starting another thread - I have YET another question for the boffins (I promise it'll be my last )

Can anyone reccommend a decent (free or otherwise) software package for web page building from scratch - preferably with an element of wysiwyg...

                              Cheers again...
