  • Fly fishing

New lake has just opened a few weeks ago at Shilbottle near Alnwick.
Fished for the first time there yesterday and it was cracking. Had loads of problems with the wind but had a 10-11lb Rainbow on the specimen pond. Apparently there are much bigger ones there and on the put and take lake people having been getting bags into double figures!
2 really nice lads running the place. Fish in there are rainbows, browns and blue trout and apparently it will be stocked soon with tiger trout up to 10lbs.

£10 for a sporting ticket/catch and release. Alos entitles you to go on the specimen pond.
£10 for normal ticket plus one fish
      £17.50 for 2 fish
      £23.50 for 3 fish

As far as I know that is prices for the day. I went up at 1.30 but had to pick me oldest up from kickboxing later on and then went back up and hour later and fished till 6.30.
times are 7.30 am ytil dusk!

hope the quaity of fish is better than all the other stockie waters. never really appealed to me catching stocked fish. last time I was at one was sweethope. caught an 8lb rainbow, was like pulling in a wet rag. I sware it actually had a heart attack and died as soon as it was hooked.

had better fights from 8oz wild brownies at cow green

maybe I\'ve just been to bad waters, but the few I\'ve fished have kinda put me off. Much prefer wild fish. fiver a day on the wear up our way, loads of browies and sea trout to play with

Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Mark, it could quite well of had a heart attack, stocked fish are fed so they grow quicker and this puts an enormous strain on their heart, that is why they put up such a poor fight. It is just like me or you eating stodgy foods for months with no excercise and then told to run a marathon. How far would we get. Heart attack alright.

I\'ve only been fly fishing twice before and only had two 2lbers so I don\'t know if 20 mins is a good time or not
Directions are: head north up the A1 it\'s about 5 mins south of Alnwick. Take the first turn off for Shilbottle and it\'s immediately as you turn off before a row of houses. Reception is just as you go in and it\'s the road to the old Whittle pit. it\'s a further mile or so down a dirt track to the 2 ponds and you just park up literally at the ponds.
Give it a try. You can\'t really grumble for a tenner!

                        by using a leader
                        about 7lb b/s
or if your good you go down to 3 or 4 lb
im still on 50lb shock leader

you get things called leader loops that grip the fly line then you tie your leader to the loop
                            then whip yourself to death
                            hahaha
