  • X-Box 360 (days of fail)

Seriously, don't buy one.... I posted this on their own forums tonite:

Sorry if this offends any fan-peeps. But this been our worst ever buy and worst ever support. Here's the whole sorry story, console.other history follows......

We bought our 3 kids both a 360 and a Nintendo Wii for Xmas 2007 between all of them . They had DS handhelds and wanted some carts for them each - we'd already planned the 360 and suggested with the nintendo price dop that they get the Wii instead of a couple of DS carts each.

360, great until about 5mths in and it fails. no red ring just not reading or loading disks and random freezing. So it goes from the UK to Germany (why)? for repair, with calls and shipping this is near 3wks turnaround, retailer (anagram of SORAG) want's nothing to do with it other than give me a phone number despite all my challenges - kids losing out and so I go with it, comes back working saying "motherboard and drive failure" thrown in is a cheesey 1mth gold (so wow we had 12mths members so maybe gained a week but lost 3 weeks or more?).

3-ish more months and the exact same fault happens, gone again after hours on the phone, it was off again for another, yes mobo and drive. The fixed machine performed perfectly until the one day you will get no support and want nothing to go wrong..... Yes, with a pile of new games on 25th December 2008 at 8am, our 360 failed with the same errors as the previous fails. By the time we get a replacement machine - ie supposedly not a fix, but a re-manufactured unit, the holidays are well over. not even a gold subscription to say sorry. just a recon console with only 3 months warranty (is that a joke warranty to stop anymore claims?).. all i was thinking was, well it's 3 fails in a year, are they hedging their bets on getting shot of most if they're over 12wks after a replacement machine???!!!

So now, here we are.... guess what? yes the replacement machine lasted less than 8 weeks. 5 calls to microsoft have had one call back in 3 days a the time I told them not to call me.

Called them tonite, took me 20mins to get an answer, gave basic details and demanded a supervisor - guy had my info and the problem details based on my previous calls, tries to transfer me and this basically takes the next hour. Get through and the *supervisor* somehow has my name and nothing else... finally a "supervisor" guy and hey he wouldn't accept my info despite having my email addy, home addy, phone number, console ID, etc, finally asks for console serial of the sticker on the replacement machine that they sent me - despite giving the on-screen console id and s/no when it was switched on and after all of the above and cuts in after 4 digits and tells me the rest!!! He then fobs me off with "3-6 days to collect" and a "goodbye", tries to end the call.

Hung up after holding the line open for as long as I could be chewed, it's and 0800 number so costing them not me - sorry if i've held anyone up, honest.

    Never buying microsoft again tho.

Now keep in mind that this is our current list of machines, some with optical and some with cart drives:

    Cart Machines:
    2x Megadrives (working never repaired)
    2x N64 (working never repaired)

    Optical Consoles:
1 x Playstation original model (chipped, hacked, bad lad, needed the odd lens cleaning but still working)
1 x Playstation PS1 model (never repaired working)
2 x Dreamcast (working never repaired)
1 x Gamecube (working never repaired)
1 x XBox (working never repaired)
1 x XBox 360 (original machine failed 3x, replacement now wont read any optical disks)
1 x Wii (working never repaired) nb probably has MORE hours than the 360 on it!

    Handhelds:
3 x Gameboy Colours (working never repaired)
    3 x NDS's (working never repaired)

2x laptop's, one an ancient IBM thinkpad, used it last week. other one is 2yrs in.
    3x base stations, all working
1x server knackered... umm... died after long nights of down loads that shall not be mentioned.... but lived for 4yrs

    Other:
1982/3 Speccy's, my own xmas 82 48k still working if i can find it, and a 128k working but with a duff tape deck. even had a 70's woody atari 2600 that only gave up last year....

Ohh and I'm not racist or intollerant of speach/hearing issues, I admit that my hearing is dire but also want to point out that I'm a Geordie but have killed my accent since my youth so you can't blame that - when I fekking spell out my surname as many ways as I can, the S's are S's - you might mic up "f" and "s", but "Sierra" and "Foxtrot" do NOT sound the same, don't get me started on my postcode ending in 'BQ' which throws even the council staff who have my name and info in front of them.....

Gears of War 2 though on mammys new HDTV. WOW. I've been turning up at work and commando rolling up to my desk, popping my head up and saying "Sweet" a lot. Haven't even looked at COD4 yet, can't wait.

COD on the wii is pretty radical

the whole motion sensor not wired up malarkey makes it a whole different bucket of gumbo

the living room is a no go area though when the bairn's got his lightsaber going playing force unleashed

      Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

to be honest i think you have just had really bad luck with consoles lol
had 2 x 360s and not one problem with it,both core and currently now owning a lite, got 1 x ps3 had to get console replaced and only took them 3 days and swapped them at door step sealed etc. straight through on the phone and no funny questions
that was the only console i have never had problems with.
playing fifa 09 non stop and decided to try abit cod5, doesnt help with stress levels at all lol

We've got 2 360's, my oldest has had his for 3 years and no probs, the other we bought at Christmas for my middle lad to stop them fighting over the original one.

COD Waw is fantastic on X box Live. am hooked and sneak away at every opportunity to take on the world (beats standing on a beach freezing me nads off for nowt...cheaper too)

Maybe I've just had bad luck to get 2 machines which have both faulted, but here's the latest update - I noticed that despite the guy saying 3-6 days to collect, that I hadn't had the usual confirmation mail or mail from the courier, so i called tech support again for an update and was told that collection hadn't been requested, the notes that the "supervisor" had put on the account was that I made a complaint that the machine had faulted and then supposedly hung up on him!

loads of lad' at work have 360's and when they get the "ring of death" they wrap a towel round the machine switch it on for 20min's to overheat it ,they say that that some 360's may have a problem with the solder cracking on a pcb and the overheating remelts the solder and fills the crack in ) im assuming the machines are out of warranty

Ive just got my eldest sons 360 back from frankfurt today. Bought him another in the mean time not expecting ms to do anything about the broken one as it was chipped.
They sent a replacment one out without checking the broken one so now he has 2 360s but only one set of leads and power supplies.

Well, we've just got the machine back finally today.

The original machine suffered both motherboard and dvd drive failure twice and then dvd drive the third time which led to the replacement machine being sent out. The replacement failled, has been repaired and returned - failure was *drum roll*.... dvd drive again.

Hope you have better luck with this one m8. My son wants to keep both of his so he can play online with the unchipped one and buy cheap games for the other one. Told him he could as long as he bought the original games and ill pay for the backups.
