For Working people who want a pet, a Cat is the best choice. They are happy to stay inside alone all day, don't need walking, don't need bathing & never smell as Dogs do.
Cant understand why some let them roam though, just laziness & lack of care for the Cat & other peoples Gardens.
Statistics for length of life} 7 years for roaming Cat. 17 years for house Cat. No Brainer really.

that's one of the most sensible posts i've read on any forum! I didn't realize theyd be happy enough in the house, which is fair enough. laziness and lack of care letting them roam, and also shortenings there lifespan. Down to the owners then really, as with all pet ownership

What a pile of pooh Bob (and Paul). How do you know a cat is happy being locked up it's entire life, when did your cat tell you that nugget of information??

A cat is meant to be able to roam, to live a life that is in its genes. "Laziness & lack of care." Total bull!! It costs me far more in vets fees as my cat is inoculated for many more diseases because she goes out. Why should we lock up animals for their entire lives - we don't even do that to murderers - they are supposed to be free to do as they please, so the only owners who are guilty of a lack of care are the "jailer" owners! If you want a plaything to satisfy your needs, buy a soft toy, not a living creature and don't even get me started on people who keep birds in cages!! I took a cat in 2 years ago, my first ever pet, because it was homeless and I give it the best life I can and I take offence to your nonsense post.

If you had the choice of living 55 years with the freedom to do as you wish, or 70 years locked in a house, which would you choose?

My Cats are more than happy as House Cats & aren't happy at all outside. How do I know this? They dash back indoors if let out in the Garden.
And when I get my hands covered in someone elses Cat **** when doing my Borders, as happens regularly, it makes me glad that mine are cared for indoors & not let loose to foul someone elses Garden.
As for being allowed to roam free cos its in their Genes, my Cats only know the life they have & aint complaining lol.

Yeah my cat did that, so I took her on a lead into the garden until she got comfortable and now she is out every night, days sometimes too.

It is there genes and instinct to be free, becuase they only "know" the life they have, does not mean the don't have an instinct to be out.

Anyway your cats, up to you how you treat them I suppose, but please don't make ignorant comments about people who do things differently.

if cats are supposed to be free to do as they please does the same apply to dogs? Should man's best friend also be able to roam, to live a life that is in its genes? be free to mess where it wants, and do what it wants?

i'm not really a pet lover either way, i have two children who more than occupy my time!

Personally i don't see why anyone elses pet should be free to roam around and mess where they please, which is why i agreed with bob.

if cats were taken for walks on a leader, and the owner made to pick up their mess then that would make more sense to me.

ps. nice of you to take a cat in and care for it , not all people would.

You are correct it wasn't the aim of the original post, but it was Bob who went off on a tangent. Anyway I apologise for prolonging the off point debate and won't be posting on the thread again.

My cat will be let outside because I feel it would be irresponsible to not let him. Dogs aren't like cats...they rely heavily on their humans for a lot of everything they do. Cats are independent creatures and require a different type of stimulus. I chose a cat over a dog because I live in a flat and it would be more unfair on a dog to spend 8 hours a day unattended than a cat.

At the minute the wife comes home every lunchtime to check on him and top his bowl up etc

When he is older we will prob leave him the whole day because we both work...this isn't irresponsible as he gets lavished with attention when we see him and he was a rescue kitten also. Rather him with us than some chav family.

Getting him a drinks fountain ffs that's how much we loves him

In as couple of years time I'm hoping to buy a house...at that point we may buy a dog, because our situation may be different.

haha good one. I didn't mean to come across as sharp but everyone's entitled to their opinions, just nee point arguing with people over it.
