That's cropped up repeatedly for the last few years, they charge a handling fee just to relay a form, it's not a scam as such but it is just a company looking to make easy money - people should contact HMRC directly for advice if they think they may be entitled to anything and not use companies like this.

that happened to a mate of mine from work he was overpaid by Ł1400 the poor bloke was made to pay it back at Ł200 a month

Worth reminding people to hang onto their P60's each year when they get them and file them somewhere safe - then if there are ever any issues with tax credits claims (or any other benefits) they've got proof of their earnings for every tax year.

So far we've been told we owe them Ł8000, Ł1700 and the latest Ł6000. The rules say if they payed you in error and you had no reason to believe you weren't entitled then you do not have to pay it back. From day one they were given the correct details from us, everytime there was the slightest change in circumstance, pay rise, the ex'es part time hours changing - we kept them informed - we'd been advised by a benefits person we should be entitled to something. Nope not good enough, not their fault, legal proceedings the lot. A mate of mine works for these chimps and told me his line manager has said to them - "Underpayments, bury them under a pile of crap. Overpayments, hound the suckers till they pay up."

A mate of the exes got royally dumped on by her fella and made a claim, within 2 weeks about Ł1500 appeared in her account, she rang them and said they'd made a mistake, no way was she entitled to it. Oh well just don't touch it and pay us back when we ask for it. This lass was starving with a bairn wanting stuff and said take it away from me, I can't afford to spend it and then pay it back. No can do they said. Absolute freaking disgrace.

If a mistake has occurred and you have been over paid on any benefit and you have taken all reasonable steps to keep the dept up to date AND CAN PROVE THAT.
Then it is what is called an official error.
I was in the position of having my income support stopped, without warning, no letter etc.
I am a carer for my wife.
Turns out I was paid it for 3 years and was not entitled to it.
Quite right,when they showed me the figures they were right.
But that was due to some prat not transferring info in their offices.
I was then told that we were under investigation for fraud to the tune of 5700 pounds.
As my wife keeps everything she ever gets we proved quickly it was their fault.
They still tried it on and wanted payment.
Once I enlisted the help of a solicitor and got the crack, official errors are very common and cannot be clawed back if it is not your fault, then their attitude changed.
To the extent I got an apology and compensation.
So if any DWP dept is getting heavy and you feel you are in the right, plus sorry to say it again, you can prove it.
Fight it, you do have rights.
