Not bothered about going away for a while, would even go to the front.
I'm guessing I would have no bother getting into the army infantry, I was really just wondering if I'd be given the choice!
Was not aware about going away for 6 months like, but, that's alright. I don't see how that would go with work but being a civil servant it's not like I would get the sack if I was called up
So why not join up fulltime?

I have a good day job, well paid and very lucky at my age to have it done my qualifications and now it's a job for life really and only going to get better.
The army is just something I've always wanted to do, but I'd be daft to throw away my career and join as a regular so I'm looking at the reserves

I've been really lucky with my work/career, its been tough at times doing the study but I have the qualifications I need to be in my job for life now. I'm only going to move up in the work I do and I am alreay paid well, but theres no reason I cant keep progressing.
The army is what I always wanted to do for as far back as I can remember. I took a year out after college, planned to join the army after but I just fell into my line of work and opportunities opened up, took the plunge and did the exams for years and now I'm set for life in a very secure job.
I keep saying it, but I know just how lucky I am to have the job I have and be paid the way I am, I am always thankful for that and never take it for granted.
It would be stupid to abandon that and join the army - not to mention more than half my annual pay!
All that said, I never lost the desire to join the forces in some capacity and if I dont do it soon I will regret it. I think about it a fair bit and that desire isnt going to go away.

But if you have this desire to do something why let money dictate what you do? My wife and kids dictate what I do not money, it sounds to me that you just like the thought of being in the forces like a childhood fantasy.
Phil, its all about playing the money game in the end, if I joined the regulars and ditched my job I'd lose everything because of the pay cut. I get by with plenty to spare at the moment, but I couldn't take such a hit on pay - I really want my wife and kids to have a good life also and right now the money I bring in means I can do that, I can only ask our lass to work part time aswell these days which makes me happy.
Gary, I dont get what your on about. I say I have a job for life because its always going to be there, the pension is good, the pay is good and I am only going to keep on progressing, most of the time I enjoy my job too, I really cant complain - thats a keeper in my book
Joining the reserves/playing soldiers for a few weeks a year is alright for me. Nobody is going to convince me that I am better off forgetting what I have achieved so far and signing up full time for the army.
Yes, it is a childhood dream of mine to be in the forces, something I want to do for lots of reasons, be it just as a reserve. I'm not thinking of joining up just because I want to fire a real gun instead of one on the XBOX.
I feel like it would better me as a person, give me character and experience I can take with me for life and of course, serve my country and be proud of it.
Join Liam bugger what anyone else thinks, you will be doing your bit and the reservists don't carry passengers now so you will a valuable member serving your country with your spare time.

That would be the show stopper for me however.
I was single when I was in the ARmy, I couldn't imagine doing the same thing now though, with a wife and kids at home, going god knows where for 6 months at a time.

Seems overwhelmingly more good than bad from people who have been there and done it.
Go to a careers office...whatever route you take be prepared for proper hard yakka combined with a very liberal sprinkling of bullsh1t...good old fashioned military BS too, where you can't tell the knob head to shut up because that knob head has got got seniority on you. Suck it up or put your chit in...them's the brutal facts
If you've already got home life and career I'd have second thoughts...you'll likely be sent to a war zone...that's not being cowardly but you've lived in a nice bubble where daddy/husband is always home...all of a sudden you're not there
Did 4 years in the Navy and never went anywhere dangerous... 6 months after I left, Iraq kicked off again and our services have never really left the region since

Ive been to the careers office (army) and they were all for signing me up right away, telling me how fantastic it is going to be, loads of people have careers, families and join the reserves etc. I'm not daft, I know its not going to be a few months of playing footy with the lads, target practice and having a laugh like the careers officer was telling me. He didnt have a bad word to say, made it sound like it was going to be a holiday...insulted my intelligence a bit to be honest the way he was talking about it.
I'm prepared for all the bollocks that goes with it, I'm under no illusions there, will be the hardest thing I have ever done. Its another reason why I want to do it actually, I know theres going to be serious graft, hard times - I want to make the most of myself and I see the forces helping me with that.

Go for it and good luck to you, the Forces need willing people to support them and the Government seems very much to favour Reservists these days.
The only thing I'd add is that if you are away from your current job for lengths of time then maybe it will hinder your advancement within and possibly impact on your wage structure while you are away. That's just my lack of understanding though, I really don't know the details of being in the situation or know anyone who is a Reserve.

My best mate is in the parachute reserve regiment... He has a secure job, lovely missus but still thoroughly enjoys his time away serving his country. It's possible to do it all so long as your prepared for potentially being deployed. Go for it mate
