Been thinking about joining the reserves for a while. Should be 100% healthy again soon after waiting for an op for a long time finally getting sorted.

Anyone here have any experience in any of the forces or as a reservist? Any help/advice would be appreciated before I start looking into it seriously.

Well don't know if this is advice but I had the best 9yrs of my life in the Army (1986-1995) best friends made and tossers who I'd rather forget .. you meet all types but when the **** hits the fan even the tossers muck in lol. I've travelled and had some of the best moments ever, seen some scary ****, moments of darkness but wouldn't change a thing as it all makes me the man I am today. Go for it buddy and make many a good friend .... just stay fit, running and run again !

      Depends or your age really.

And type of role you want to apply for.

Pretty sure I am young enough to take on any role and I have the right skills / qualifications to enter as a solider or an officer from what I have read.

I'm really just concerned that because of what I do for a living, I am stereotyped and stuck behind a desk all day somewhere in an army back office.
I'd like to have a say in what I will be doing...not just get put wherever they are short of resources.
Would like something exciting and active, especially after basically being inactive for the last year, gaining pounds, losing all fitness and so on.

Appreciate there will be the inevitable few ****ers, but that's life and il put up with that

Cheers mate, just what I am wanting to hear tbh, obviously I will get the details from recruitment when the time comes but good to know it was an overall positive experience for you.

Seems to be the trend from people I have asked

I served in the army mate, 89-02. And got to see a lot of the world that I wouldn't of if I hadn't joined.

I asked your age because its a young man's game tbh. In my experience. I joined at 19, some went straight in from school, and there was the odd person I met who joined at 25 or so.

The TA are not well thought of by the regular army like, and after leaving the army it never crossed my mind to join the "SAS"
A lot if not all military exercises are done with the regulars, but it all depends on the role you do as to what involvement in things you get.

They do look for skills that are transferable like, but there's loads of roles available to gain new career/skills.
And it will help you progress if you know about the job before you do it. Unless you want to be infantry like?

I agree with you there mate. The lad was a bit of a knob shiner though so it had to be done. Ha ha.

If you do sign up for whichever of the three service's be prepared to go away leaving friends and family...the reserves are used more and more since they made all the redundancies

Saturdays and Sundays are more like 6 month deployments these days

Particularly in the modern political climate

I have a couple of friends who joined the TA and have served in the afghan war on the front line for 2 x 6 month stints in 3 years, so not your sas as years ago, luçkily both came back and loved and hated the experience. They joined a para reservists regiment.

Not bothered about going away for a while, would even go to the front.
I'm guessing I would have no bother getting into the army infantry, I was really just wondering if I'd be given the choice!

Was not aware about going away for 6 months like, but, that's alright. I don't see how that would go with work but being a civil servant it's not like I would get the sack if I was called up
