  • Thought I'd share this one since it's been "one of those days"....

I sent this to my family but thought I might aswell share here... Background to the household - Me, Ali (wife), 3 kids and amongst our pets are 2 border collie pups aged 9mths (Gromit) and 6mths (Wile-E)...

So today I ran a few errands in the morning then settled down for a lazy day, we're all sitting watching stuff about the Amazon and Congo on SKY, cool programmes about the fish and wildlife, very interesting. Kept glancing over at our freshly (last week) re-stocked fishtank and nodding at the telly when I spotted familiar species. Ali was sat at the table on her laptop the dogs were playing with their chew-toys - just a lazy "last week off work/school" afternoon.

    Then all hell broke loose.....

In a split second the peace was shattered by Wile-E screaming, and I do mean screaming, Ali and the kids errupting into utter panic not knowing why the pup was going mental shrieking like this and me spotting the big clue - the fish tank, in that same split second, suddenly went silent and dark. Yes the stupid pup had got bored chewing his toy and chewed - the extension that powers the heater, pumps, filter and twin lights of the tank. He'd gone clean through half the cable.
    The fuse didn't pop.
At this point there's a dog thrashing around the living room floor with a live cable in his mouth and he naturally can't let go of it. Of course he's also now, in this split second, pee'd a small lake all around him.....

So, with all my years of training and knowledge I obviously will do the correct thing and either unplug the cord or flick the switch off.....

    No.

In that split second my only thought was the dog, so yes I dive into a pool of liquid, of the doggy bladder kind, and grab dog in one hand and cable in the other. Next week I'm getting "I'm A Stupid Tit" tattood on my forehead. Yanked the two of them apart and now I'm holding the wire. Christ I need to get my fusebox in this house updated/checked, really I do, nothing at all tripped/blew, though I almost added to the puddle I was sitting in. It was a nice buzz, I think I threw the poor dog half the room length as my muscles went into spasm. Thank the lord my hand hit the socket switch as it came back around.

The poor dog, now semi soaked in his own bodily fluid, is doing laps of the living room in utter terror. Sam and Ali are screaming in horror. Gromit is now also in utter panic mode. I'm soaked in dog pee and somewhat disorientated from a nice jolt of mains electricity. Finally everyone calms down, the dogs are both hiding under the table but slowly come out and within 10mins have calmed.

Better safe than sorry a quick call and visit to the vet, he's got a slight burn to his gum but that is it. Shot of pain-killer just in case it starts to sting/burn and a thorough check up. He's completely back to normal now. At least my vet is a nice lady and didn't take my eyes out for the short notice visit, vets bill of £23 and need to fix my extension lead for the tank, but I bet he won't chew another piece of wire!

Morale of the story - don't ever have Border Collies as pets, they're not right in the head and if you're less intelligent than they are then you're both screwed!

What a fun day! By the way, little nod of appreciation to St Claire vets in Blyth, I started going there a couple of years ago when I was struggling to find a reliable vet who would treat small animals (we keep pet rats aswell) at a sensible price, they've been brilliant, saw the dog straight away today and gave him a really thorough check.

Aye could have been nasty, daft animal, think it was a pure reflex/instinct response from myself but bugger it was some jolt I got and I wasn't the one with a mains feed direct to my gob!

had a couple of close shaves with mains electric but never had a bolt. I did as a teenager at Beadnell "test out" whether the string on the fence was electric. Found out when it felt like my arm being ripped out it's socket.
