Steve,
Same happened to me. Vista runs many moreprocesses than any other version of windows.it checks and double checks everything to make itself idiot proof. This all slows the pc down. I found that the running processes when I first got it were over seventy. I have got that figure down to less than fifty and it runs faster.
Look for stuff you dont need and turn them off permanently using user controlpanel.
To find what a process does use google or try
The pc will speed up eventually, its just knowing what to turn off and what to leave alone. Prebuilt pc's hold all sorts of company specific stuff that is not essential.
If all else fails buy a decent graphics card..It will knock 30% off any time to open a page.
Download a trial version of ping plotter..ping the bbc and see if you have a line issue...you should get a round ping of under 30ms to the bbc...if its above that check all the connections are sound for the telephone line and replace your adsl filter.
Cheers

You got the same problem?
When I bought this laptop I nearly took it back with a threat to insert it because it seemed so slow and impossible to use asking for permissions every time I clicked something.
One of the biggest items in vista is the media centre...have u used it?...I haven't ...so i shut it down. many other things like that and the only way is to go thru them one at a time.
Some pc's running vista have and update from xp to vista installed...this means there is an option to go back to xp which personally I would recommend untill they have vista spot on.
If you are going to shut down processes dont forget to create a restore point before...just incase.
One thing that does help is to increase your router settings for the mtu from 1400 which is a default on many routers ( and the bt setup disc) to 1450. This helps prevent packet loss when on a high speed net connect. DO NOT increase it past 1450. Google your router name and "MTU" and you will probably find instructions on how to do this.
Bl**DY heavy going this topic after a few red wines...pm me if you need any further help and I will try but I am still learning vista myself.
Cheers

Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs
Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.
