  • The great white..there or not?

You would have had to be a total recluse not to read the press on the subject of the great white.

    So ..fact or fiction?

I am intrested in sharks...I am in regular email contact with a few of the "experts" quoted in the papers...and my opinion.

We got a picture saturday...yep probably real great white footage but could be a mako if I wasn't looking for headlines.

Monday ...fin picture...thats a basker ...look at the profile of the fin ...has a convex profile...great whites have a concave (curves in) dorsal fin. Its odd an aussie expert just by seeing that fin says its a female...some new kind of sexing of sharks that I have never heard of. As far as I can find out the only way of sexing a shark is to view its naughty bits...so stick to the 4x mr aussie expert. If anyone has the sun from monday I have a picture of a basking shark about 6 ft from the boat that matches the fin profile...only problem is no one will tell me how to post pictures.

Tuesday...photoshop rules ok on that one...yep we have a potentially white shark fin ...but its a bit too posed for me...wonder how much the paper paid for that picture? The anglers picture...well we have had them cruising close to the boat (porgies that is) and have had tope leave the water chasing a bait we were reeling in. Frightened the sh*t out of the angler and we nearly caught it on video.

    What do others think.

    Cheers
    Dave

Great White Sharks are overrated in my opinion - they may be ok in the water but I'd like to see how they match up in the ring - all fin and no fist

Sharks eat licence plates I saw it on that documentary "Jaws" and yes I thought - why didn't the health and safety lads step in when the wheelhouse gaff executive chum distributor asked for a change in working location - "Brothers, we need a bigger boat"

Easier than sending the picture is to watch the film. Caution some bad language is used.

the first frame of that film is exactly the same shaped fin as the picture in the sun.

                        Some more footage here.

Shot by Stephen Brown on what can only be described as a calm day.

The shark was definately a basker and about 6 to 10 feet longer than the boat. An experience to remember

                        Cheers

My computer won't play your video Dave. When I first saw the footage on the TV with the object filmed jumping out of the water at distance, my immediate reaction was that was a young Minke whale as it comes up out of the water and collapsed on it's side (as whales do) and the colouration matches the Minke.
When I saw the pictures in the Sun I immediately thought it was a Porbeagle due to the curve of the dorsal fin. There is nothing there to give any real perspective of the size of the shark and it looks like it was filmed on a mobile which tends to make things look out of perspective.
I've been interested in Sharks since I first saw Jaws as a kid and studied books and videos of them voraciously as I wanted to be a marine biologist as a wee un.
I could be completely wrong but that is just my opinion.
