It turned out to be a common fault, when the filter is changed it has an influence on the diaphragm in the housing where the filter screws into.
There is a small black primer on the housing that you pump by hand to prime the filter but when it is damaged you get irregular fuel supply.
I changed the entire housing and filter assembly, it locates on two studs, and all was fine.
I'm not saying that this is the same problem that you havebut it is an idea.
A taxi driver friend confirmed that this is quite a common fault but it may be worth your while doing an internet search,
    Ian.
Cheers Ian comments will be passed on to my mate.

When the filter is primed after renewing it does tend to damage the diaphragm if it is old, if it starts spliting it causes the fuel supply to lose its vacuum so to speak and the car will run for about 30secs then be a swine to start after it cuts out, me mates car was the same but its goosed now!
That sounds like the right price for a pump Charlie, dont know how they justify it tho, bloody extortion!

Car problem fixed - binned the old fella and got a new one, under no circumstances will I reveal what I replaced it with as I feel my life is over now. The last spark of optimism and risk has finally faded from mine eye holes.

                  Nope no Vauxhall

                  Considered -
                  Sierra Sapphire Cosworth
                  Spilt screen VW Camper
                  Land Rover Mk11
                  Mazda 6 MPS

But went for something with a versatile seating arrangement for the modern family - my family is so modern the kids have refused to go anywhere with us since they were 3&4 year old, and the missus refuses to sit in the same room as me.

Should have went for the BubbleCar with roofrack option, option
