Being the internet guru I am(!) I hereby predict the end of the internet as we know it in the next 2 years. Standy by for massive regulation and control freakery.
My data centre is now in the states and I\'ve had lots of conversations on this topic over the last few weeks, and they are readting themselve for meltdown, so thought I\'d pass a few snippets on...
Viruses are a fact of life for you windoze bods, so get ready for soBig H and soBig I, due this summer. Their prediction is to see a big loss of service from key isps as the domain name servers are hit, denail od service attacks are likely to also bring down a lot of systems. Canadian Airtraffic control was the only one to collapse last time but predictions are for more widespread chaos
but the more sinister bit is not virus worries but general security issues. You might not know thiss but ebay was hacked about a month a go and if you haven\'t seem them all ready, if you use ebay you will start receiving emails claiming to be from ebay, or paypal (owned by ebay) or yourr bank.
these look legit, have all the logos etc and are spoofed to come from the respective.com. They all claim you need to validate your account, click here to do so etc etc etc
this will take you to a page which if you look at the address bar has the respective .com in url and asks you for bank account numbers, cc details, pin numbers, mothers maiden name etc etc etc.
Ok you have to be aa bit ddim to fall for it but when 20 million people receive one of these if 0.001% respond we are talking big numbers.
you will also see emails in the form of \"re: question for seller\" do not be tempted to go and view the item, to see what it is. You will get something worse than a virus. What you wwill end up with from this page that looks like an ebaay item is a lovely little sleeper that iss just waaiting for the next time you hit a secure web page (https) legitimately. It gonna transmit everything you enter back to its lair. If you happen to bank online, that will be all your bank details, login, password, memorable info etc etcetec, and the url of the login page to your bank - expect your bank balance to dwindle rapidly - read the terms and conditions of your internet banking account - your bank will not indemnify you if the account was logged into using your password etc.
Firewalls will not help as these little nasties came in legitimately through port 80, which firewwalls leave open, if they didn\'t you would not be able to use thee web at all
we could even seee some banks collapse a la BCCI as a result
This governemt has a planned review of the RIP act in the pipeline and a revision of the data protection act. If you publish a website, run a web server etc etc you will have to register these details.
enjoy it while it lasts folks!
tread carefully but carry a big stick
I\'ve said this before and I\'ll say it again, think twice before you buy your next windoze PC. Or as an alternative install linux on the PC you use already instead of windows. If you want to stick with windoze, think about a different browser instead of IE. But the best tool you can use is your noggin.
