  • Tha angling press

bit bored to today, so thought I'd have a we peruse of the web sites that are allied to the various sea angling publications. What a waste of time

with the increase in media distribution over the net, thier days have got to be well and truly numbered, Sea Angler might be already - http://www.seaangler.com/ very informative, unless they've moved since I bookmarked it a year or 2 back

total sea fishing, almost as pointless, but a little bit of editorial at least, ditto boat fishing monthly. Don't really sea the point of a web site that gives you little more than a picture of this months hard copy, and some guff on subscribing

Most national newspapers are already feeling the pinch as electronic delivery is starting to outnumber newstand copies. another 5 years who knows, maybe there'll be no worthwhile (is there at the moment?) printed magazines to cover the sport and everyone relies on the the likes of nesa, worldseafishing.com and others, which seem to have their finger more firmly on the pulse. I used to subscribe to TSF and BFM but gave up 2 years back and haven't missed em a bit. Don't even bother looking at em in smiths anymore.

What you have to understand is, the publishers want you to buy their product! How much or how little goes into a website, in particular, an angling publication website, depends on what is going to be in the mag that month.
You will mainly find that you will basically get a contents of whats on offer in that mag in that particular month!
I know that Sea Angler, have lost a member of staff to a fresh water publication, and he also used to keep the web page up to date - when you are short staffed, and you have deadlines to reach, especially as you approach a publication deadline, you do what is deemed necessary - and the publication of the magazine is far superior to keeping a website updated.
I reckon if a lot of anglers actually knew how much work goes into putting a magazine out every month, then a lot of them wouldn't be so quick to jump on a bandwagon and twist on about how "crap" and "it's just full of the same old stuff and advertising"......

I know precisely what goes into laying out/publishing a monthly magazine, worked in enough agencies over the years to have learnt what deadlines sound like as they fly past your ears, and still have several publishing clients now.

my point was more that media is changing and changing fast, and that the current angling press are doing sod all to keep up or move with the times and they will lose out big time in the long run. If you want evidence of how fast things are changing... in 2006, the online advertising revenue google raked in was more than all of ITV's put together, I know thats telly not publishing but has to be an indication of where things are going

I must admit, I do agree with a lot of what you're saying - personally I would find it much easier to just come into my office at home, turn on the pc and have all my angling publications there at a touch of a button...BUT -
not everyone who goes fishing are as priveliged as you and I, and do not have access to a pc. (just looking at the other side of the coin mate - but actually do agree with you).

What a coincidence! I've just got back from the weekly shopping jaunt and I added a copy of sea angler to the trolley. It's the first angling mag I've bought for 18 months. I got p****d off with reading about how to fish in the English channel and the needles etc. I've been told that they've recently included the North much more so when I've been around the angling sites, I might have a butchers.

I like the "touchy feely" experience of a magazine or newspaper and because of that I still subscribe to Sea Dangler and have a daily newspaper delivered. For me there is something civilized about eating my bacon and egg for breakfast, drinking my coffee and reading the paper or a magazine. Besides if I stopped the delivery what would I wipe my arse on after I have a crap?

Notwithstanding the above, I do feel that the angling press could do more to make online versions of their publications available to their paying readers/subscribers and possibly some cut down tasters for those who adhere to the "something for nothing" rational. The technology is there to make it very easy to do, it's the will of the magazines to add value and embrace this technology. If they don't do it, then we may see a few publications hitting the wall and disappearing as the directors of their parent companies review the accounts and say your not making any money - "bye bye".

Please accept my apologies for the somewhat offensive content of my post.

And if you believe the sincerity of my apology, do you believe what the papers and magazines say as well ?
