    My Swing on the thing!

This clobber - that was produced by hard working men and women from all over the world, paid just enough to be able to buy some of it back whilst lining the pockets of the already obscenely rich - would never make it back on to the market. It would be destroyed! It is insured, the original "owners" of these products will be completely recompensed for the loss. We have a law in this country which allows this type of salvage to take place. Well financed companies make a fortune out of laying claim to wrecks out of range of us general "scavengers" and no-one bats an eyelid.
It should go without saying that the taking of swag obviously indentified as belonging to an individual, as harped on about in the media today, is not good. The rubbish and mess created again is inexusable. But hey a cheap boat falls apart and pollutes huge areas of our coast and the headlines are all about nappy thieves and empty wine barrel collectors.

    I am retching again

That pollution is way off shore steve and essentially the fault of a shabby boat (single hulled I think/ hope) nowt to do with the BMW Beachcombers. The looters / gannets / salvage wallahs have nowt to do with that.

the greed thing of some of those 'attending to the debris' is a bit much. heard tell of one bunch on radio 4 that came down from birmingham with a large van and took 4 bmw's among other things.

the law is pretty clear that your entitled to to owt you find as long as you report it to the receiver of wrecks, if the owner doesn't claim it withing 6 months you can keep it. If they do claim it they have to compensate you for it. seems fair enough to me

as for one of the personal belongings issues....(mark puts his eat the rich hat on) they own a vineyard in south africa, but to avoid paying in tax in both the UK and south africa, they transport all their goods and chatels to the other side of the world every 6 months. laugh?? I nearly went to prudhow when I heard that.

the nappies thing puzzles me. Aren't they designed to soak up wet 'things'?? they've been in the sea FFS!!

but lets face it HM govt does not like the idea of its 'people' getting owt for nowt

wouldn't of minded one of the oak barrels though, making a cold smoker at the mo!

thats really unfair. there probably loads of AfriKaaner's that are well out of pocket (till they put there dodgy insurance claims in that is)

I'll just wait till you've drunk the contents before I come and liberate one, or I'll swap you for 40,000 litres of nivea and 10,000 bottles of Jade Goody's perfume

pmsl but on a serious note, isn't the response to getting something for nothing just an indication of how far society has gone down that road (or some would say down that pan). As a firm believer that society reflects the views of our government it would not be unreasonable to conclude that this fall in values has started at the top and cascaded its way down. Had a kid at school rip his top on a nail and came to me claiming a replacement ..not unreasonable until you find out he's done it while he's been smoking in the Boiler House. Mother's on the phone this morning claiming compensation plus it's OUR fault he's in the Boiler House as he gets punished "if he fags it behind the trees". Heaven help us.

On a lighter note did you see the "liberators" by one of the containers? They were standing in a queue, waiting their turn. Where else would that happen??
