New PC for Christmas

Looking for a new PC ,any suggestions? I want a package including monitor etc ,currently have 2.8 mhz processor ,512 DDR ram and 80gb hard drive, however no firewire or dvd writer ,I was thinking of upgrading it myself but have decided on a new system .

Don't waste ya money Steve, DVD Writer £25 max, firewire card for a tenner, fitted in minutes!

Surely a 2.8ghz does everything you want?

if you really wanted to wean yourself away from the darkside you could do something really silly like run windows on it at the same time if you wanted , and flick between em, no rebooting, just windows in, well, another window really,

My nephew is a Mac lover ,he works with them and has one at home ,like most he's a real boffin but works more than me so I can't pester him Mark .
Keith I know what you're saying mate but this pc is 3 years old now and I've done bits and bobs ,fiddled and tweaked and feel I want to start afresh straight out the box with no hassle.

The one I'm typing on is nearly 5 years old, is very rarely switched off and hasn't let me down.

Keep watching the special offers Aldi have, It is a Medion Base station, but generally comes with all the latest stuff and it is always winning computer awards. I 've had one for three years now and never had any bother with it.
When they are on offer you will need to queue outside a shop as they generally sell out as soon as the shop opens.

you choose all the individual specs yourself and they build and test it .. prices are good.

But of course building it yourself is not too difficult (and very rewarding)

I`m an Intel pentium 4 meself however the athalon 64 is actually as good (and improving) at half the processor price....

1Gig memory is a must (£70 ish)
2 Hard drives circa 160Gb @ £40 each (but only buy it with one installed otherwise XP will span 2 drives)...... it`s better to add later then you can control system to be on first drive only.
go for best Motherboard you can afford, this facilitates better upgrading at a later stage circa £100 for a socket 939 to accomadate 940 pin athalon
(or a socket 478 for a pentium 4)

Have to agree with Keith, for what you have there add the extras in yourself and save a fortune.

Although if you do decide to go new the pc I'm using is a Medion and was bought from Aldi 3yrs ago. The spec on it when I got it was comparable to pc's costing £100's more from the 'major' brands. Even though it's 3yrs old its still comparable to some good quality new machines now. Definitely worth keeping an eye on Aldi, but you do need to be quick as they sell out very quickly.

Strange, it didn't do it for me. All I got was, this programme is not responding so on closing it down it booted my Nesa which was loaded through Mozilla Firefox.

Are these not compatable or what. My son tells me that Mozilla is one of the best???????
