Totally dependent on where you fish, depth of water infront of you, what's infront of you etc. I've fished up to 18/20ft at some places and if the waters reasonably deep infront of me I start at about 10/12ft. Its just a case of reading the mark and adjust your depth until you find the fish. This my own opinion like, others may differ.Regards Nicky.

I find it better to plumb ya depth , then work ya way up until you connect with pockets of fish .
Plumb ya depth with no hook length on and mark ya line with a black marker so ya can go back to fishing the bottom , most the time fish are in the bottom quarter of water but will move up if feed travels ,
Trial and error mate , good luckI am a fisherman !
It is not merely something that I do
It is who I am !
Fishing is not simply my escape.
It is where I am supposed to be.
It is not a place that I go
But a lifelong journey that I am taking
It is a passage that was shown to me and that I will continue to show others.
When you understand all of this you will then know me .
And we will fish together
