What a weekend, only a couple of mile from the caravan park at Strensall car started acting up, loosing power and a warning light coming on. Got car to caravan park and phoned AA, lad couldn’t find what was wrong, and his diagnostic machine only went back to RAV 2004, mine was 2003 so it couldn’t read engine to find fault. Tried a few things went for a run still not right. Advised not to use car and could either get recovery straight away or on Tuesday, opted for Tuesday, as we had come down for the Game Fair. Anyway hired a little run around to keep us going. Off to game fair on Sunday, thankfully knowing the area I kept off the A1, as we drove underneath the traffic on A1 was at a standstill, later found out there was a 14 mile tail back. Got to the fair no bother, asked first steward where the competitors parking was Wha no idea, asked the next one, wha no idea, dropped missus off for the House and carried on, next two stewards pointed (couldn’t speak English) anyway ended up in the main car park, asked the main attendant Wha, na mate don’t know. Got to the entrance with all my gear on carp trolley with dog on lead, asked there, wha no idea, could try going back out and round again 14 mile tail back yea sure, where are the dog events wha no idea, explained I have a blue badge “didn’t care” eventually after showing him on the map where the event was, he got in a van drove off and left me to trudge along with all my gear. Got to where I wanted to be, and all the competitors where up in arms about the stewarding and how they where being treated. After a lie down on the lounger decided to give the dog a run, didn’t do to badly over the course scoring 8.5 to 9’s, had a rest a cuppa and went for another round, by this time it was very hot, watched a few dogs seemed to be struggling but being pushed, dog finished two tests and did well, but I decided to pull him out, far to hot. Missus came back and we decided to head off, so did a couple of thousand others, and all going to the only entrance out, many instead of waiting in an orderly queue charged over the grass causing an almighty traffic jam at the gate out.
Set off early next day, just me and the dog, again missed traffic by going through Boroughbridge, new from the day before where I had to run off so told a young female steward where I was going, pity she hadn’t been there the day before she was clued up, turned off but over shot final grass approach road by 10-15 yards, turned round, when a very officious lardy daa steward jumped in front of car and said I couldn’t go back, would have to go out again, explained I was disabled, not bothered have to go out and round again, started to move to turn, nutter jumped in front of the car yelling, what you doing, what you doing, obviously couldn’t cope with the strain of organising the event. Drove off, intending to go home, another steward who had been watching waved me down and asked what the problem was, after explaining he just said drive over the xxxxxxx grass, think he was not amused with this other guy. Anyway got settled in, and being cool had a quick drink and decided to give the course a go, sat the dog down at the mark, where upon he started sniffing the ground and really wasn’t paying attention, dummy was thrown and the judge said set your dog away, he sniffed at the ground and then shot off and tried to hump a dog, some silly person had come to the event with their dog in heat, they where asked to leave, but they had already been to all the tests, dogs where lying down, resenting all over the place. Anyway got him settled and we ended up with 29 out of thirty points, not bad. As if was cool decided on having our second go, normally only give him two goes, one guy to qualify for the final had ten goes, his dog must have been pig sick, anyway without the hastle of a dog on heat we scored max points and had a nice long wait for the final. Had a walk round and saw the NESSA people. Came to 4pm and the final, an unusually high number of people qualified, thirteen in all, normal 5-6 at most, anyway after a few runs off we ended 5th, am I proud or what, have to say we where top spaniel again, all those above where labs, and the 3-4 below where labs. Had a very nice drive home. To top it all, each night I have been trying to get a photo of a barn owl that fly’s around the sire, and normally fly’s the same path. Fri, Sat, Sun, nothing, last night Monday, last night, was sitting there with my camouflage netting over me, the light was still brilliant, I though come on show yourself for me, he did but not in his normal route, instead of coming directly toward me he flew across my line of fire about ten foot away, looked and flew over the hedge. Rose the next day took dog out in pouring rain took hire car back and then the journey home in an AA wagon with the car on the back. As well as the fault they couldn’t rectify mate has informed me, decided to get service and MOT done as they are almost due, car needs a new clutch. Got home to find the freezer door slightly open and everything soft. You have to laugh
