  • High shelf

Fished the high shelf this afternoon from 4 till 630, fished there to try and avoid the wind. Bait used was rag and prawn. Only 1 fish caught but it was a nice plaice, weighed 1lb 7oz.

Is that defo a plaice mate? Looks like a flounder with orange spots as you do get th quite often. Also looks like it has a curve lateral line whereas on a plaice it is totally straight. Not trying to burst your bubble as its a lovely fish either way

It's a defo a plaice mate, its got the boney lumps along its head. Unless founders have those as well, I thought they didn't.......

Cracking plaice mate, worth sticking it out in the wind.

nice pictures mate, its a nice shot in the summer and flat seas.Different story in the winter, you can feel that rock sway underneath you, only a matter of time before that goes, just a heads up for lads thinking of giving it a go in cod season.

Definitely a Plaice. You can make out the klingon headgear which is a defining feature of a Plaice, another identifying factor is the shape of the tail, rounded on a Plaice (as here) and flat on a Flounder. Body shape would also suggest that it's a Plaice - squat and rounded as opposed to more elongated and diamond shaped for a Flounder. The best way to tell (which you can't get from a photo unfortunately) is to gently rub your finger along the lateral line - a Plaice is smooth both ways while a Flounder will be very rough towards the head.

Orange spots are pretty meaningless as an id aid; I've had plenty of Plaice with very dull spots and a few Flounder with bright ones.

Yeah this was smooth to the touch, the spots like you say weren't really that visible.
