  • Rocklingless Roker 06/05/2013

With bait left over from Sunday I had a few hours on Roker to finish off the bank holiday weekend. Almost didn't make it after a family barbecue and a couple of Banana Beers in the sun but after getting home I resisted slumping on the sofa and chucked the gear in the car arriving at the pier just before 8pm and low water.

The pier was practically deserted with just a couple of lads fishing before the bunker and I had the round end to myself. Got set up with two rods, usual tactics one cast out one plopped over the side, two hook rigs ragworm and bluey for bait.

Wasn't long before the cast out rod was nodding away and a little codling was on the pier to beat the blank

and thus was the pattern set for the rest of the evening. It was a manic nights fishing with at least one fish every chuck. Next cast I got a Dab one the long rod and then a Whiting on the plopper to make it three species:

As the sun went down and the tide started to flood the other lads headed home and I had the pier to myself. I had a couple of Flounder on the long rod before a surprisingly violent tug on the plopper saw this little feller come in

A Coalie to the plopper made it 6 species and then the long rod went mental. I picked it up to find a load of slack line and then when I caught up with it I could tell it wasn't another tiddler. Whatever it was was giving a good account of itself in the tide until I got it to the surface and handballed it up the pier. 65cm, a smidgeon under 2 1/2lb and my first NE woofer

Fished on until midnight off the end, still a fish a chuck mainly small codling. Decided to move down to the barrier for the last hour to try for something different but it was the same there, four more little codling in and hour and then I was out of bait and it was time to head for home.

All in all a cracking nights fishing, 7 different species, well over 20 fish with at least 12 codling, two Coalies, a Dab, three Flounder, three Whiting, a Bullhead and the Dogfish. Most of the fish came to ragworm, including the woofer until I moved down to the barrier when all four codling there took bluey. Big thanks to young Aaran for the photo and my quest for a Rockling for the species hunt continues...

Canny session Stewart, plenty to keep you busy and a couple of new species. Did you try out the new rod? I was on there myself 10am - 12.30. Sun shinning, nice little breeze, hundreds of pedestrians - no fish.

Just the big guns last night Alan. Still need to get some line for the reel, some 3 and 5g jig heads and some Isomes and then I'll be away

You've had a canny session thee mate. What's the proper name for the big fish you caught? I got bot all off roker pier yesterday from 12am till 6pm. I was just past the 2nd set of steps. The end was very busy yesterday.
            All the gear, no idea.

I've had many a session at Chesil ruined by them Mike. A nice rarity up here but when you are getting them two at a time and they are hitting the bait within moments of you casting it out they quickly become a pain...

Cheers mate. I thought it might have been a dog fish. Woofer does give it away I just wanted to be sure. Ive never seen one caught before. Well done.
