  • Wed; middleton pier. Hartlepool.

My m8 Alan and I who never mentioned it was his birthday set up at 11-30am and we were steadily catching whitey all day same as the other guys on the pier. Other lads had small flatties but we only pulled the whities. We had about a dozen in total but put a few smaller ones back. This pier has no fishing etiquete at all as people turn up and set up right on top of you then cast right over the top of all who were there first. I did say to these guys that they were out of order but they said they would sort the tangled lines as they are pulled in. ITS BETTER ALL ROUND IF PEOPLE HAD A BIT OF NOUNCE AND DIDNT PUSH INTO PLACES WHERE OTHERS ARE FISHING. I needed to say something as I would never dream of such poor manners. Some of the lads were sound as a pound but the dodgepots know who they are. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN
LOVE TO FISH, HATE TO BLANK. STAY AT HOME AND HAVE A BREAKFAST .....

Happened to me this year at the walkway, I caught a size codling and a bloke set up immediately maybe 1 yard away if that. He was a nice fella but made fishing impossible as he was casting to every point in the compass. In the end I moved and left him to it. Suprised me because I fished the freshwater scene for 35 years and never saw that. it just doesn't happen.

thats the problem with pier fishing, you fish a lot closer together than if you were on a beach.

rod rests side by side is normal with 2 rods on each rest.

it can also be annoying when you turn up to the end of a pier to find 2 guys who think that because they were there first you cant fish there, when actually if fished correctly 10 can fish on there comfortably.

piers have hot spots and those fishing there regularly will know exactly where they are. they will also know that 20ft further back or off the mark and you might as well go home.

i find side by side ok but when someone sets up a rod rest directly behind you or stands holding there rod behind you they are really pushing there luck.

another problem on the heugh is when someone [usually an occasional angler] puts there bags or box right behing there rod rest usually where everyone needs to cast.

ive been on middleton when the cod showed up in numbers [rare now] lads from the collieries were on there phones and lads came from all over and started setting up.

they set rod rests up behing everyone already fishing, meaning if you were at the front you,d struggle to cast and some stood behind them holding them rods

i was over the moon as i wrapped up knowing the fish had gone off.

I dont mind being crowded on piers but hate being haversacked on rock marks. If the mark i want to fish is busy, ill choose another one. I had a bloke cost me a good fish last year while fishing cambois hole, first he cast over me then continued to strike his rod as i was bringing the fish in. He ended up cutting through my line even though he could see it was me making his rod go. If your gonna push in at least have the decency to know what u are doing.
