  • South Shields Pier 05/03/2013

I fancied a session up the pier last night but with work in the morning I could not do a late one so headed up there for 7.30pm. With a high tide at 9.20pm it would be prime time fishing so I expected the pier to be busy. However when I called in to Moonfleet after work to pick up my bait Andy said there was a big football match on so there would probably be a few watching that. Not being a football fan and being a total thicky on the subject I had no idea who was playing but was optimistic that I might have a nice quiet session. When I arrived there was one lad fishing the Brigade Hut and a mate of mine fishing just before the Hole in The Wall. He was heading off shortly to watch the match too and I could see no head lights at all up the pier. Turns out it was completely deserted past the gate and I had the pier to myself and the pick of any mark I wanted. Cool. Since I had to leave early I didn't want to waste time walking up to one of the marks near the end so to maximise fishing time I picked a mark in the first part of the pier setting up at the last bench before the first bend, opposite the white "slippery when wet" sign.

I was specied hunting again tonight so I chucked out a two hook flapper into the seaward side baited with lug on one hook and rag on the other. I also set up a spinning rod with a simple rig using a drilled bullet head and a short trace to a small aberdeen hook fishing just a few yards out between the snags and boulders on the bay side hoping for a scorpion fish. I only lost two of these rigs to the snags and didn't get a scorpion but I did manage to pull out a nice little shore rockling which was a species point I needed.

The other rod caught me four codling (largest 25cm), a whiting 28cm and a five bearded rockling. So a fun session - seven fish and four species. At about 11.15pm I put out my last cast and had just settled down to watch my rod tip when there was a massive knock! Boyoyoyoing !! The biggest tip rattle I have had this year and what was obviously a seriously good fish. OMG. I picked up my rod waiting for another knock, it came, strike! feels heavy ! pull! Snap!!! Nooooooo!!!!!!!!! I lost what would have certainly been my best fish of 2013 on what I can only assume was a snag or the line had cut on a sharp bit rock. I don't think it could be the weight of the fish as I was using 35lb line though it was a bit old so may have deteriorated. Whatever it was and whatever the reason I was gutted. It's just as well I didn't get to see what it was as I would probably have been even more gutted if I knew. Oh well. That's fishing. Never mind though I may get him next time

    A most enjoyable session.

Unlucky on the snapped line and possibly a real good fish lost, but well done
on catching what you did, bet you change your line for new now.

Great report as always! And good pics. Do you use a camera or a phone? Unlucky on the snap-off. I know what you mean about them rocks being sharp.

It's a camera, an old one but it has a makro button for doing the close ups so does the job. Yeah time for some new line I think.
