Having bait left after a rubbish session on ssp on Friday night losing loads of gear and catching nothing, I headed out around 3pm yesterday. Firstly I had a look at Jarrow riverside but the water looked rotten and full of debris so I headed for Shields.
I got set up at the Walkway, there were plenty people there from the old jetty up to the top so I fished the bottom end. I stayed about an hour and a half but caught nothing. The river started to fill up with rubbish after the tide turned, it looked like it was going to be some time before it cleared so I packed up and headed for the pier. A lad that had arrived just before me had a small codling but he left at the same time as me.
At the pier I set up at the 15 mark, just up from Gary p and his mate. First cast I had a Dab then nothing else until it went dark. I had a bite practically every cast and I caught a canny flounder not long after dark. The bites continued with no result until about 8pm when at last I got my first Codling of the season, nothing big, just over a pound, but it's a start.
I packed up after that and headed back for a few drinks and MOTD. No gear lost and a few fish, the complete opposite to the night before. The fish were caught on cocktails of rag, mussel, mackerel and frozen blacks, the Codling took rag/mackerel. I fished with two rigs, one with the hook above the sinker and one trailing, the fish only went for the one with the hook up.
Lovely night to be out, hardly even needed a coat on

Or that one when it's older. I forgot to mention, all fish returned alive.
