Well.....
Finished work around 3am and decided to have a few chucks down at Shields to use up some left over bait (maccy, lug and mussel). Popped along to the walkway for ease and set up two rods, a straight paternoster with some maccy and a second rod with lug and mussel for cod hunting!
First couple of chucks and the amount of weed coming up the river was a nightmare. There was so much debrise that I though I was gonna call it a night but then once the tide started to drop off towards high water the cr@p seemed to stop being a problem.... then the fun began!
Bites every cast on both rods including two slack line bites on the cod rod .... which I missed First to strike was my light river rod with a whopper whiting around the 40cm mark, my biggest whiting by a mile and was nice and fat so kept for the pan. Next cast, another small whiting..... it countinued for the next 3.5hrs untill I left..... managed to winkle out another big whiting, as long as the first but not as fat so it went back to grow a bit bigger.
Then it happened.........
FIRST SIZE COD OF THE SEASON!!!!!!
Probs around the 1.5-2lb mark. As I already had the whiting I put the codling back. I also caught a smaller codling of around 1/2lb but on the way in I got smashed by something and though the fish was a big one that had just woken up but when I got the codling in it was a mess..... part of the tail bitten off, bite marks along its side and part of the gill cover bitten off and removed.... looked like Dracula had a go at it.... fish was dead when it went back into the water..... no idea what that couple have been... a big cod? Shoal of those large whiting? Managed another couple of whiting and a flounder before I left, all in all a nice few hours after work and im finally off the mark!!!!!
