  • Pollack Bashing South Shields Pier 21/22/23 Sept 2012

Well after my recent pollack success I decided to give the jelly worms a go on the pier at first light fri/sat/sun. I arrived about 5.45am on Friday to be greeted by a northerly wind and a canny sea on. Great codding conditions and there is me with my lures. Doh! Typical. Anyway not to be deterred I headed up to the area between the blocks and the end and gave it a go for a couple of hours using black/red firetails, all black and motor oil coloured jellies and caught nowt.

Saturday , attempt 2, arrived just after first light and was the only one on the pier. Still a bit windy with a bit of swell and once again I had the wrong gear and should have been cod fishing After an hour or so another lad turned up to do some bait fishing. Anyway I packed in after a couple of hours still no pollack goling for my lures. I stopped to talk to the other lad as I was leaving and his rod tip went. "This is a good fish" he kept saying as he reeled it in and it was. I held is rod for him while he handballed it up the wall and it was a lovely big cod. At least 6lb I would guess but the rumour on the pier today was 8lb so it could have been. Well done mate a cracking fish.

And so to today, Sunday. Having had no success with the lures I decided to go bait fishing today and try for a cod same spot as the lad had that beauty yesterday. I got there, no wind, flat calm, perfect spinning conditions and there is me with the cod gear Doh again !!!! Well never mind, I carried on and after about 45 mins my rod tip started leaping about and I grabbed my rod and started reeling in. It felt good, it stayed on, and ironically I landed a good pollack almost 2lb 11oz and a new PB for me beating my previous PB that I had caught a couple of months ago by 1oz. That was the only fish of the morning but I am looking forward to having it for tea tonight. Hooray.
